7 Classification Methods for Reciprocating Piston Diesel Engines

Diesel engines can be divided into two types based on the movement of the piston: reciprocating piston type and rotary piston type. Due to the many problems with rotary piston diesel engines, they have not yet been widely used. Diesel generators, automobiles, and construction machinery are often powered by piston type diesel engines. The classification method for reciprocating piston diesel engines is as follows.

(1) Classified by the number of strokes per work cycle: there are two types: four stroke and two-stroke. Diesel engines used for power generation are mostly four stroke engines.

(2) Classified by cooling method: there are two types: water-cooled and air-cooled. Diesel engines used for power generation are mostly water-cooled.

(3) Classified by intake method: there are two types: non supercharged (naturally aspirated) and supercharged.

(4) Classified by the number of cylinders: there are single cylinder, dual cylinder, and multi cylinder diesel engines.

(5) Classified by cylinder arrangement: there are inline, V-shaped, horizontal, and opposed types. As shown in Figure 25.

(6) Classified by diesel engine speed or average piston speed: there are high-speed (calibrated speed above 1000r/min or average piston speed above 9m/s), medium speed (calibrated speed between 600-10000r/mm or average piston speed between 6-9m/s), and low-speed (calibrated speed below 600r/min or average piston speed below 6m/s) diesel engines.

(7) Classified by purpose: diesel engines are used for power generation, automobiles, construction machinery, tractors, railway locomotives, ships, agriculture, tanks, and motorcycles.
