Cast QT900-2 High Strength and High Rigidity Ductile Iron Cylinder Block

Nov. 06, 2024

Recently, the world's first cast QT900-2 high-strength and high rigidity ductile iron cylinder block was successfully cast at Guangxi Yuchai Casting Co., Ltd. From the surface quality of the cylinder block blank, body dissection, and body performance test results, it is superior to the original cylinder block, and the weight has also been reduced by 30%.

The main difficulty in producing ductile iron cylinder blocks lies in the complex structure of the components and the large differences in wall thickness. Due to the paste like solidification characteristics of ductile iron, it is difficult to achieve shrinkage through conventional shrinkage processes. The cylinder block is prone to a large number of shrinkage holes and porosity problems, which are difficult to completely solve using conventional processes.

Yuchai Casting successfully mass-produced a 3mm high-strength thin-walled flywheel shell using the iron type sand covering process instead of aluminum. In this case, the casting state QT900-2 material process was used to adjust and optimize various process parameters such as the thickness of the sand layer, iron type thickness, and melting in the original cylinder body pouring system and areas prone to shrinkage and looseness, achieving complete success. At present, this process material has been applied in shaft and shell castings such as flywheel housings, crankshafts, bearing covers, and robot reducers, achieving good results.

At present, the materials for commercial diesel engine cylinder blocks are developing towards creep iron materials. However, creep iron materials have characteristics such as low yield strength, significant differences in performance at different creep rates, and the need for structural strength to ensure stress, which makes it difficult to achieve lightweighting using creep iron.

And this type of high-strength and high rigidity ductile iron has a yield strength 114% higher and an elastic modulus 13% higher than RUT400, making it a new material for lightweight cylinder blocks. According to calculations, if applied to the heaviest cylinder block of an engine, it is expected to reduce weight by 100 kilograms. At the same time, upgrading and expanding the engine cylinder becomes extremely easy, and it can prevent cylinder cracking caused by detonation in gas and hydrogen engines. After being applied to engines with a displacement of 11 liters or more in Yuchai, it will better help customers achieve commercial value and have great economic and social benefits.
