Cylinder Shortage Fault of 280 KW Weichai Generator Set

Feb. 02, 2024

The Dingbo series 280 KW Weichai generator set adopts electrostatic spraying technology, which has the characteristics of rust prevention, corrosion resistance, excellent performance, advanced technology, reliable operation, and convenient maintenance. Do you know the diagnostic method for the "cylinder shortage" fault of the 280 KW Weichai generator set?

Weichai diesel generator

"Lack of cylinder" is a common fault in diesel generator sets, which refers to a few cylinders in a multi cylinder engine not working or working intermittently. The main phenomena of the 280 KW Weichai generator set are the unstable and shaking operation of the diesel engine, discontinuous and uneven sound, weakness, easy stalling, black smoke emitted from the exhaust, accompanied by dripping oil and a "raw oil smell" in the exhaust pipe.

Fault diagnosis: The causes of cylinder shortage can be divided into two aspects: the local engine and the fuel supply system. The reason for this machine is that it cannot reach the expected ignition temperature and pressure at the end of the compression stroke, such as excessive piston ring leakage, loose valve sealing, cylinder gasket burning through, etc. The reason for the fuel supply system is that the fuel injector of a certain cylinder cannot stably spray diesel with good quality, accurate quantity, and timing.

Usually, "cylinder shortage" is more pronounced at idle. Therefore, the diagnostic method for cylinder shortage fault is as follows: when the diesel engine is idling after starting, touch the exhaust manifolds of each cylinder with your hand. If the temperature of any manifold rises slowly, it indicates that the cylinder is not working.

1. If you suspect that the cylinder pressure is insufficient, you can add a little engine oil to the cylinder from the installation hole of the fuel injector before starting. If the operation is normal, it can confirm the judgment. If the cylinder is still not working properly and there is black smoke or severe oil dripping from the exhaust pipe, accompanied by an increase in oil level, it indicates that the fuel injector of the cylinder is faulty.

2. If you suspect that the valve is not sealed, you can add a small amount of oil well to the cylinder and shake it a few times before removing the fuel injector. Shake the piston of this cylinder to the top dead center (the piston can be detected from the fuel injector port), use low-pressure compressed air pipe head to press against the fuel injector port, and use a dedicated listening rod to press against the intake and exhaust manifolds. If you hear a "sizzle..." sound, it indicates that the valve is leaking; If you hear the sound of atmospheric flow, you can shake the crankshaft again before listening.

3. If you open the radiator cover and see bubbles coming out of the radiator, or if there is a sound in the crankcase, it indicates that the cylinder gasket is burned through.

4. If the above diagnosis does not solve the problem, further inspection should be conducted to see if the compression ratio of the cylinder is insufficient and if there are other mechanical problems such as bent connecting rods.
