Diesel Engine Power and Fuel Consumption Rate of Diesel Generators

Jan. 02, 2025

Calibration of diesel engine power: The effective power and corresponding speed of the diesel engine are clearly specified on the nameplate and user manual of the diesel engine product. The effective power and corresponding speed marked on the Mingpi are called the rated power (rated power) and rated speed (rated speed), collectively referred to as the calibration conditions. The calibration of diesel engine power is determined comprehensively based on the characteristics, usage features, lifespan, and reliability requirements of the diesel engine. At present, according to the national standard B1105.1-1987 "Standard Test Methods for Internal Combustion Engine Bench Performance - Calibration of Environmental Conditions and Power, Fuel Consumption, and Oil Consumption", the calibration power of diesel engines is divided into four types.

(1) 15 minute power: Under standard environmental conditions (atmospheric pressure P0=100kPa, relative humidity 30%, ambient temperature 25 ℃, inlet temperature of intercooler cooling medium T=298K or 25 ℃), the diesel engine is allowed to operate continuously for 15 minutes at its calibrated power.

(2) 1-hour power: Under standard environmental conditions, the diesel engine is allowed to operate continuously for 1 hour at its calibrated power.

(3) 12h power: Under standard environmental conditions, the diesel engine is allowed to operate continuously for 12 hours at its calibrated power.

(4) Continuous power: The calibrated power of a diesel engine that allows for long-term continuous operation under standard environmental conditions.

15 minute power refers to the maximum speed allowed for automotive diesel engines, such as cars, motorcycles, and motorboats, to operate at full load within 15 minutes when overtaking or chasing. During normal driving, operate according to the calibrated power of the engine. For automotive diesel engines, the calibration power is usually 1 hour, the maximum power is 15 minutes, and the corresponding speed is the calibration speed and maximum speed. Cars often operate at below rated power. Therefore, in general, the calibration power of automotive diesel engines is set relatively high to fully utilize the working performance of the diesel engine. Diesel engines for generator sets, marine engines, and diesel locomotives are typically rated at continuous power and maximum power at ih. Generator sets and ship navigation require high durability and reliability of diesel engines, and the power used cannot be calibrated too high. The calibration of power usage is a complex task. The higher the power usage calibration of a diesel engine, the shorter its service life. At present, the power leopard calibration of products is based on user requirements and product performance, and is calibrated by the manufacturer themselves.

The power calibrated for diesel engines is specific to a particular environmental condition. The environmental conditions refer to the atmospheric pressure, temperature, and relative temperature at the operating location of the diesel engine, which have a significant impact on the performance of the diesel engine. When the ambient atmospheric pressure decreases, the temperature increases, and the relative humidity increases, the amount of dry air sucked into the cylinder of the diesel engine will decrease, and the power of the diesel engine will decrease. On the contrary, the power of the diesel engine will increase. Due to the significant impact of environmental conditions on the performance of diesel engines, standard environmental conditions must be specified during power calibration. If the diesel engine operates under non-standard conditions, its effective power and fuel consumption rate should be adjusted to standard environmental conditions.

Correction of diesel engine power and fuel consumption rate: The correction of diesel engine power is specified in GB 1105.1-1987 "Standard Environmental Performance Test Method for Internal Combustion Engine Test Methods and Calibration of Power, Fuel Consumption, and Engine Oil Consumption", which specifies two methods for diesel engine power correction: adjustable fuel quantity method and equal fuel quantity method. Below is a detailed introduction to the adjustable oil quantity method.

The adjustable fuel quantity method holds that the power limit of a diesel engine is only limited by the excess air coefficient a. Therefore, the correction of diesel engine power should be based on the principle of equality a. When the environmental conditions change, the fuel supply should be adjusted accordingly to maintain a constant air coefficient. Under these conditions, it is assumed that the combustion situation and indicated power remain unchanged, and the indicated power is proportional to the amount of dry air and fuel entering the cylinder. Then, considering the impact of environmental conditions on mechanical losses, adjust the effective power and fuel consumption rate.
