Fully Automatic Battery Charging for Diesel Generator Sets

Feb. 27, 2025

The battery is a necessary condition to ensure the successful startup of each diesel generator set. Its functions include electrically starting the diesel engine, controlling the fuel system of the unit, and enabling the real-time startup, operation, or shutdown of the automation (ATS). If it fails to supply power properly, it will have a significant impact on the operation of the diesel generator set. Today, Dingbo Power will elaborate on the inspection methods to determine whether the fully automatic battery of the diesel generator set is charging properly.

If you have a multimeter, after starting the engine, measure the voltage between the two poles of the battery. The voltage must exceed 13V to be considered normal. If you find that the charging voltage is too low, you need to invite a professional for inspection and repair. If you don't have a multimeter, you can use the visual inspection method. The specific operation is as follows: After starting the engine, open the water filler cap of the battery and check if there are bubbles emerging from each cell. Under normal circumstances, there should be continuous bubbles, and the number of bubbles will increase as the charging progresses. If there are no bubbles, there may be a problem with the charging system. Here, we would like to specifically remind you that under no circumstances should you smoke on-site at this time. This is because hydrogen is generated during this inspection, and smoking can pose a risk of explosion and fire.

In addition, there are two precautions for charging a new fully automatic battery of a diesel generator set:

Firstly, before use, the new battery should be charged in two stages as specified. After the first stage of charging, when the liquid level shows uniform bubbling or the terminal voltage of a single cell rises to 2.4V, the second stage of charging should be carried out until the terminal voltage and the specific gravity of the electrolyte remain basically stable within 3 hours. (Note: During charging, the temperature of the electrolyte should not exceed 45ºC. Otherwise, the charging current should be reduced or cooling measures should be taken to prevent the battery from overheating and affecting its internal quality.)

Secondly, during charging, the positive pole of the battery should be connected to the positive pole of the DC charging power supply, and the negative pole should be connected to the negative pole of the charging power supply. Make sure not to connect them wrongly. Also, the ventilation cap must be unscrewed to allow the gas generated during charging to escape smoothly. After the battery is fully charged, it can be subjected to a trial discharge or put into actual use.
