Key Points for Using Cold Starting Fluid of Diesel Generators

When using cold starting fluid to start a diesel generator set in cold weather, users should pay attention to the following points:

1. Do not abuse. Starting fluid is injected into the cylinder to assist in starting diesel generator sets during difficult starting times in winter. Do not treat difficult starting at low temperatures as difficult starting at room temperature. If it is difficult to start at room temperature, it indicates that the diesel engine or electric starting device has malfunctioned. Blindly using starting fluid at this time will cover up the hidden danger of the malfunction, causing the malfunction to worsen or even cause serious accidents.


2. Don't overly rely on it. Although starting fluid helps with cold engine starting, it is necessary to preheat and lubricate the diesel engine before cold starting, otherwise it may cause cold cylinder pulling or tile burning accidents during starting. Therefore, before starting, it is necessary to add hot water to the radiator for preheating, close the throttle, and rotate the crankshaft dozens of times, so that the oil can be delivered to each friction surface for pre lubrication and reduce starting resistance, just like usual.


3. Do not boom the accelerator. Spray cold starting fluid into the air intake of the air filter. After starting the diesel engine, let it run at idle speed and heat up. Do not hit the accelerator pedal, and pay attention to the oil pressure to prevent problems such as tile burning due to poor oil flow at low temperatures.


4. Do not mix gasoline. When the starting fluid is insufficient, add gasoline to the starting fluid; Or if the starting effect is poor, directly injecting starting fluid into the intake pipe or cylinder may cause starting detonation or explosion accidents, which must be absolutely prohibited.


Long term use of starting fluid can cause the following injuries to the oil engine: (1) It is easy to cause detonation, and is often accompanied by the phenomenon of "cylinder shortage". It can cause significant mechanical impact on moving parts such as crank and connecting rod mechanisms. (2) Frequently using starting fluid to assist combustion, the combustion condition in the cylinder deteriorates in a short period of time after starting a diesel engine, which can easily cause problems such as carbon deposition in the combustion chamber and erosion near the valve seat of the cylinder head. (3) Due to factors such as carbon deposits, it is easy to cause loose valve sealing, clogging of fuel injector holes, and small hidden piston ring movement, resulting in poor cylinder air tightness and poor atomization of fuel injectors, further reducing the low-temperature starting performance of diesel engines, commonly known as "habitual problems". (4) Some low-temperature starting fluids may have quality issues (initially able to atomize, but often unable to atomize after use for a period of time) and may not effectively support combustion. (5) Low temperature starting fluid is generally filled in a pressure tank, which is prone to detonation when exposed to high temperatures. Safety should be taken into consideration when carrying it with the vehicle.


In summary, using low-temperature starting fluid to assist combustion when starting a diesel engine is only an emergency starting method, and cannot be used as a long-term, or even conventional, starting method.
