Preparation of Battery Electrolyte for Diesel Generator Sets Part 1

When the diesel engine leaves the factory, for the convenience of storage and transportation, the new batteries shipped as random accessories do not come with electrolyte. Therefore, electrolyte should be added before use, and non wet charged batteries also need to be charged. The electrolyte should be concentrated sulfuric acid (HGBl008-59) specifically designed for batteries, or diluted sulfuric acid with a specific gravity of 1.280 kg/cm3 should be prepared by mixing pure, white, and transparent industrial sulfuric acid with distilled water. When preparing, the following ratios can be referred to, such as a volume ratio: concentrated sulfuric acid is 1, distilled water is 2.8; If the weight ratio is 1 for concentrated sulfuric acid and 1.7 for distilled water, the actual measured specific gravity should be used as the final standard.

The electrolyte specific gravity of 1.280 kg/cm3 refers to the correction of the specific gravity based on the measured electrolyte temperature when the ambient temperature is 20 ℃ and the electrolyte temperature is not at 20 ℃. For every 1 ℃ increase or decrease in temperature, the specific gravity of the electrolyte should increase or decrease by 0.0007 kg/cm3. When preparing electrolyte, lead tanks or acid resistant, temperature resistant, iron free ceramic cylinders, plastic, glass and other acid resistant containers should be used. When preparing, first pour the required amount of distilled water into a container, then slowly pour in a certain amount of sulfuric acid, and then mix thoroughly with a plastic stick or a wooden stick wrapped in green lead skin.

Never pour distilled water into concentrated sulfuric acid to prevent accidents or injuries caused by sulfuric acid boiling and splashing. The main reason is that when concentrated sulfuric acid is diluted with water, it releases a large amount of heat. The specific gravity of water is lighter than sulfuric acid, and there is concentrated sulfuric acid in the container. At this time, when water is poured in, it will be on top, like boiling water, and it is very easy to splash around the container.

Special attention should be paid to wearing protective glasses and rubber gloves even if normal operation is possible. In case of the worst, glasses must also be worn for eye protection. Once the eyes and skin are damaged by sulfuric acid, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
