Preparation of Battery Electrolyte for Diesel Generator Sets Part 2

Jan. 16, 2025

Continuing from the previous text, this article continues to introduce to diesel generator users how to prepare battery electrolyte and charging matters for diesel generator sets.

The newly prepared electrolyte has a high temperature and needs to be cooled to around 30 ℃ before being injected into the battery. The liquid level of the electrolyte should be 10-15mm higher than the electrode plate, otherwise the injected electrolyte is easily absorbed by the electrode plate. Otherwise, it should be replenished in a timely manner. Due to the heat generated by injecting electrolyte into the battery, it is necessary to let the battery sit for 6-8 hours and cool it down to 35 ℃ before charging. But the time from injecting electrolyte to charging shall not exceed 24 hours. When charging, connect the positive pole of the battery to the positive pole of the DC charging power supply, and the negative pole of the battery to the negative pole of the charging power supply. Do not connect them incorrectly. And the ventilation cover must be unscrewed to allow the gas generated during charging to escape smoothly.

To prevent misconnection during charging, it is usually recommended to first connect the charging cable and observe the reading on the voltage meter of the charger. If the needle is reversed, it indicates that the charging cable is misconnected and the positive and negative poles of the two charging cables should be swapped. Confirm that the charging cable is connected correctly before charging the battery. The 6-Q-195 new battery should be charged in two stages according to regulations before use (except for the 6-QH-150 rechargeable battery). After the first stage of charging, when the liquid level uniformly bubbles or the terminal voltage of a single cell battery rises to 2.4V, the second stage of charging should be carried out until the terminal voltage and electrolyte density are basically stable within 3 hours.

During charging, the temperature of the electrolyte should not exceed 45 ℃. Otherwise, the charging current should be reduced or cooling measures should be taken to prevent the battery from overheating and affecting its performance. When approaching the end of charging, distilled water or dilute sulfuric acid with a specific gravity of 1.400 kg/cm3 should be used to adjust the electrolyte density to (1.280 ± 0.005) kg/cm3 (30 ℃), and then charged for 1-2 hours until the electrolyte density is uniform up and down. After the battery is fully charged, it can be used for trial discharge or operation.
