What happens when you apply a load to a brushless AC generator?

When you apply for a load on an AC generator, its response is a voltage drop at the output terminal. On the contrary, removing some loads will cause an increase in voltage at the generator terminals. The magnitude of the decrease depends on key factors such as the design of the AC generator, its components, its excitation system (such as shunting, auxiliary ports), and its automatic voltage regulation.

If the AC generator is connected to a diesel engine, the engine will also respond to the application of the load, which will have an impact on the overall diesel generator system.

When the load is applied to the AC generator, the increase in current causes a decrease in voltage on the main stator and generator terminals of the AC generator. This voltage drop is called a transient voltage drop, and then the excitation system responds by attempting to restore the voltage to a predetermined stable state.

The AVR senses a decrease in voltage through its connection to the AC generator terminal and increases its flow to the exciter stator, which in turn increases the generator terminal.

Unlike when applying for a fixed speed engine load, you usually hear the engine's response. The voltage drop in an AC generator can only be seen using measuring equipment such as a multimeter or by reading from the generator control panel.

In the case of a large applied load, the voltage may significantly decrease and this effect can be observed. The lighting connected to the load may flicker, and sensitive electronic devices may shut down or malfunction.
