Test requirements for standby diesel generator:
There are two types of testing, monthly testing and annual testing. If your generator fails the monthly test, you can place it for annual testing. If all your diesel generators fail, then there is a problem.
During the testing period, your diesel generator must run for at least half an hour. In order for your diesel generator to pass the test, it must meet the minimum exhaust gas temperature required by the manufacturer for monthly testing. Not only that. It should also work smoothly at room temperature and operate at 30% kilowatt hour or higher.
Now, let's quickly discuss the annual testing. Remember, it is aimed at diesel generators that have not passed monthly testing. For annual testing, you need to run your diesel generator continuously for two hours.
The test must run at 25% load capacity for 3 minutes.
The test must run at 50% load capacity for 3 minutes.
The test must run at 75% load capacity for one hour
How to test a backup diesel generator?
To test the backup diesel generator, you need equipment called a load bank. The design of this unit is to simulate your load on a diesel generator, which is actually calibrated in kilowatts, so you can choose the kilowatt load you want. After connecting to your diesel generator, you need to run your diesel generator at 25% load capacity for 30 minutes. To calculate this, you need to find the 25% rated kilowatts of your diesel generator.
For example, if the power of your diesel generator is 20 kilowatts, 25% of the power is 5 kilowatts. So, you need to turn the load library calibration button to 5 kW and let your diesel generator run for 30 minutes.
Afterwards, you need to perform the same calculation for 50% of the load capacity, calculate 50% of the kilowatt power of the diesel generator, and turn the calibration knob to the generated kilowatt, allowing the diesel generator to run for 30 minutes.
Finally, perform the same calculation as explained above for 75% of the load capacity. This time, you need to run it for one hour. If there are no issues, you can rest assured.
It is recommended that you test the diesel generator at least once a month as it helps prevent diesel generator malfunctions. When you need a diesel generator the most, you don't want any problems with it.
