The Difference between Manual and Electric Starting of Diesel Generators

Apr. 01, 2024

Today, Dingbo Electric will share with you three common problems with diesel generators, as follows:

emergency backup generator

Question 1: What is the difference between manual and electric starting of diesel generators?

There are three types of starting for generator motors:

Manual start - The engine is driven by human muscle power through a manual starting device. In short, if you pull hard, the engine will start. This starting method is most commonly used in small, low-power units.

Electric start - the engine is driven by an electric starter and ignition key, just like in a car.

Automatic start - The motor is driven by an automatic device, which starts the generator when the main grid voltage disappears.

Question 2: What are the consequences of the generator running at full load for a long time?

When the load connected to the generator does not exceed the following values, the generator operates at 40% -80% of its rated power in its optimal state. Therefore, first of all, it is important to choose the correct installation power. At this point, it is best to add 15% -20% to the calculated load.

If the generator is overloaded for a long time, exceeding the maximum operating mode or operating within its capacity, it may lead to the following consequences:

Engine overheating;

The AC generator overheats, resulting in winding burnout;

The integrity of the fuel supply system is damaged, which may lead to low oil pressure and engine failure;

Reduce the service life of the generator;

Increase fuel consumption;

The instrument connected to the generator is damaged.

Question 3: What work is done during diesel generator maintenance?

Firstly, we need to record the maintenance status of the diesel generator and clarify whether it is a backup power source or a main power source.

The first diesel generator must be put into use for 50 hours or one year after the first one, whichever comes first. During the first preventive maintenance, the oil and oil filter are usually replaced.

The frequency of follow-up services directly depends on the engine model on which the diesel generator is assembled. For example, in engine based stations, PERKINS recommends maintaining for 500 hours at regular intervals. Meanwhile, the generator installed on the engine base needs to be maintained for 250 hours at regular intervals. Meanwhile, please remember that diesel generators (like gasoline generators) require maintenance at least once a year, regardless of their lifespan and usage conditions.

Subsequent work includes replacing the oil, oil filter, and fuel filter. Consumables such as antifreeze, generator belt, valve cap gasket, etc. may vary depending on the lifespan or service life of the generator. It is recommended to replace the air filter with pollution.

Therefore, the workload of generator maintenance is not significantly different from that of automotive engine maintenance, and is determined by the regulations set by diesel generator and engine manufacturers.
