A single generator system includes an operation panel, engine functions, and generator function interfaces. This allows the engine and generator to be controlled by individual components. The operation panel provides users with easy to view and use information, generator set control, alarms, and monitoring. Many suppliers offer panel options such as AC metering and alphanumeric display.
Components of a single generator set
There are many types of components available for generator setup and configuration. The system can be basic or complex, including remote monitoring and networking. Here is an example of a basic system component:
Generator set - composed of an engine and a generator, and equipped with an operation panel.
Operator panel - communicates with the automatic transfer switch (for starting signals). Control the start, operation, and monitoring activities of the engine and generator.
Automatic transfer switch - monitors the power supply of the switch panel. When there is a significant decrease or loss of power, the switch sends a signal to the generator set control panel to start the engine.
Switch panel - distributes power to various circuits.
Loss of motivation
When the main power supply loses power, the following events occur:
1. The automatic transfer switch sends a start signal to the operating panel of the generator set.
2. Start the generator set on the control panel and monitor the engine and generator functions.
3. The generator supplies power to the switch panel. The emergency power supply is distributed according to the design.
When the main power supply is available, the automatic transfer switch disconnects the generator set and connects it to the main power grid.
5. The operation panel controls the engine running time for cooling purposes.
Remote network interface
Remote HMIs
There are different models of remote HMI, such as:
Remote device - This device can control the generator away from the main control panel.
Bar chart - displays graphical information on the electromechanical performance of the generator.
Alarm - Provides visual and auditory indications of alarm or status conditions.
Large generators are usually located in rooms separate from the switchgear room. In this example, the alarm is remotely connected to the switch room for monitoring of individual generator sets. For critical operations, monitoring can be implemented to check the operation of the generator during power failures.
Remote monitoring
The installation of remote monitors allows for extended monitoring capabilities. Some features include:
Access the user interface through multiple computers and monitor at multiple designated locations.
Monitor through WIFI and intelligent device interface.
Send email via SMTP and text to specified devices via SMS.
