The Role of Fuel Tank in The Fuel Supply System of Diesel Generator Set

The low-pressure fuel supply system of a diesel generator set consists of a fuel tank, fuel transfer pump, filter, etc. The entire fuel flow path is: fuel tank, coarse filter, fuel delivery pump, filter, fuel injection pump, fuel injector, and combustion chamber. It can be divided into two sections: the low-pressure oil circuit (before the fuel injection pump) and the high-pressure oil circuit (after the fuel injection pump). The function of a fuel tank is to store fuel, usually made by stamping and welding steel plates. Its capacity should usually be able to meet the needs of diesel engines for 8-10 hours of operation.

The interior of the fuel tank is usually divided into several grids by a baffle plate to prevent the diesel from generating foam due to impact in the fuel tank, which affects the normal fuel supply. There are oil outlets and drain ports inside the fuel tank, with the outlet located higher than the drain port to allow impurities in the fuel to settle at the bottom of the tank and prevent them from flowing into the fuel system through the outlet. The oil drain port is located at the lowest position at the bottom of the fuel tank, used to regularly clean out impurities that have settled at the bottom of the tank.

The top of the fuel tank has a refueling port and a vent hole. The fuel filler is equipped with a filter screen, which filters the fuel when filling the tank to keep the oil clean. The vent hole is used to keep the internal space of the fuel tank connected to the atmosphere, preventing a decrease in pressure inside the tank due to a decrease in oil level during operation, which may affect normal fuel supply. The fuel tank is also equipped with oil level measuring devices such as dipsticks.

If the working environment of a diesel engine is harsh, it is easy for dust or rain to mix into the fuel tank, causing diesel to be contaminated. These factors can cause abnormal wear and tear of precision components in the fuel system, so it is required to clean the fuel tank of the diesel engine every 600 hours of operation.
