Treatment Methods for Diesel Generator Cylinder Pulling Noise

The sound of diesel generator cylinder pulling refers to several different depths of grooves generated when the cylinder wall moves along the direction of piston movement, resulting in cylinder leakage. Eight main causes of cylinder pulling noise in diesel generators:

 

1. Improper use, failure to operate the unit as required during the running in period, overloading of the diesel generator, high temperature, damage to the lubricating film between the cylinder and piston (ring), and damage to the piston rings and cylinder walls. In severe cases, the piston expands too much and bites the cylinder wall.

 

2. Improper maintenance, failure to remove piston rings in a timely manner, resulting in the loss of elasticity of the piston rings in the ring groove and failure to remove them in a timely manner.

 

3. Failure to clean the accumulated carbon during scraping can cause extremely hard carbon particles to fall into the cylinder gap, resulting in abrasive strain.

 

When assembling after repair, the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall is too small, and the end gap of the piston ring is too small.

 

5. The cutting edge of the piston ring or the detachment of the piston pin retaining ring causes the piston pin to fall off.

 

6. Cooling or lubrication system malfunction, resulting in poor cylinder heat dissipation and lubrication.

 

7. During cold start or low temperature, the load suddenly increases and the fuel atomization is poor, resulting in a large amount of fuel entering the cylinder, flushing the lubricating film on the cylinder wall, and pulling the cylinder.

 

8. The deformation of the connecting rod causes the piston to twist in the cylinder.

 

Diagnosis and treatment methods for diesel generator cylinder sound:

 

The cylinder pulling noise of a diesel generator can deteriorate its power and economy, and in severe cases, it can get stuck in the cylinder, causing the engine to malfunction. After the oil cylinder is pulled by the piston, it will cause oil to rush into the combustion chamber, causing carbon to accumulate in the combustion chamber, and at the same time, the oil will leak into the oil pan, diluting the oil. Sometimes, oil smoke and wheezing can be seen from the oil port. So, how to correctly diagnose and deal with the noise of diesel generator cylinder pulling?

 

When the diesel generator set is running, there is a sound similar to knocking, but it does not weaken with the increase of the temperature of the diesel generator, and it can be preliminarily determined as cylinder sound.

 

Remove the cylinder head and inspect the cylinder wall for damage, which can generally be divided into three stages: initial, intermediate, and final.

 

Initial stage: The sound of the diesel engine pulling the cylinder is not very clear, but there is oil entering the combustion chamber, and carbon deposits increase. Gas leaks into the crankcase during compression, causing oil to deteriorate. Oil fumes spew out from the fuel filler and ventilation pipes in the crankcase, producing oil fumes during acceleration. At this point, it can be diagnosed as early cylinder pulling. At this point, check the piston connecting rod assembly, replace the oil and oil filter element, and clean the oil pan. After installation, the running in can be used for a period of time, and the sealing performance of the cylinder will be improved, but the power performance is not as good as before cylinder pulling.

 

Intermediate stage: The diesel generator has severe cylinder pulling and air leakage, and abnormal cylinder knocking noise is obvious. Open the oil cap, a large amount of oil smoke comes out, and the exhaust pipe emits thick blue smoke, resulting in poor idling. During oil cut-off detection, abnormal noise is reduced. If it occurs within multiple days, the oil cut-off method is used for detection, and the abnormal noise can be reduced but will not disappear. When pulling the cylinder in the middle section, if the pulling marks on the cylinder wall are not deep, you can use an oilstone to polish it, replace the same model, quality, and specifications of pistons, and the abnormal noise will be greatly reduced.

 

In the later stage, there is a noticeable knocking and air leakage sound when pulling the cylinder, and the power performance is significantly reduced. As the speed increases, the sound becomes louder and there is shaking, which can cause the piston to break or damage the cylinder block in severe cases. For this, it is necessary to replace the cylinder liner, piston, and piston rings.
