What Are The Types of Fixed Generators?

Jun. 06, 2024

Although we previously focused on portable generators, we hope to shift our focus to another type of generator in the market, which is the fixed type generator. Compared to portable generators, fixed generators should be installed on the factory site and provide backup power for your business in case of power outages.

So what are the differences between fixed generators and portable generators?

When it comes to fixed generators, there are mainly two types of fixed generators used in the market - diesel and natural gas. Although these two types of generators work similarly, there are some important differences between them.

When it comes to these two types of fixed generators, this is one of the biggest decision-makers. Natural gas generators consume natural gas, or may be converted to consume propane, while diesel generators consume diesel. Although various enterprises typically use diesel and natural gas generators, there are some key factors to consider before purchasing.

Natural gas generators are usually directly connected to the natural gas pipelines of major utilities, unlike diesel generators that require fuel tanks. This means that as long as the connection of the main gas facility is not disconnected and working properly, the generator can operate almost indefinitely without worrying about refueling. Although this may seem like a smarter choice between the two, it is important to note that natural gas generators require more frequent maintenance between two uses. In addition, in the event of natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, or earthquakes, natural gas is one of the first public utilities to be cut off in order to prevent potential fires or explosions. One thing to remember is, never attempt to backup more generators than you can provide. Always ensure that you have sufficient gas supply to provide sufficient power to the generator.

Diesel generators sometimes install a fuel tank called a diesel base tank on the base of the generator set. It stores diesel fuel and delivers it to the generator for operation. In some cases, factories may install a larger fuel tank away from the generator and connect the fuel lines to the larger tank, eliminating the need for a basic fuel tank to operate the generator. This means that diesel generators are not dependent on natural gas pipelines and the possibility of being shut down, but it is important to remember that diesel generators are usually limited by their fuel tank capacity. This makes it important to record how much diesel was consumed and the rate of consumption. When purchasing and installing diesel generators, it is relatively important to consider the possibility of generator operation and the need to provide stable fuel. A good example of this situation is if there is a blizzard and the main utility power is interrupted. A diesel generator can provide power for your facility, but it is important to have an appropriate emergency plan to refuel the diesel fuel tank. One solution may be to install additional portable diesel fuel tanks on site or establish logistical support for the transportation of diesel fuel to prevent such emergencies.
