What is The Maintenance Checklist for Diesel Generators?

May. 17, 2024

An industrial generator (also known as a diesel generator set) can be used for decades, but the prerequisite is proper maintenance. Although there are few moving parts in a generator, it contains sensitive components that require frequent attention. The maintenance or repair of a complete diesel generator set requires different measures to be taken according to different schedules. If you need a schedule for implementing these measures, the following is a basic list of daily, monthly, semi annual, and annual repairs or maintenance for diesel generators.

Daily measures

Diesel generators should receive the following measures every day:

General Inspection - Check the generator set for loose parts, signs of corrosion on the parts, traces of carbon, and accumulation of dust.

Inspection of coolant heater - Ensure that the coolant heater is securely in place and check for signs of wear.

Oil Check - Check the oil level and add oil if necessary.

Fuel Check - Check the fuel level and add fuel as needed.

Boost air duct inspection - Ensure that the boost air duct is securely connected to the radiator and check for signs of wear.

Diesel generator maintenance personnel usually implement the above measures. Generator technicians can also execute them as part of a regular service agreement.

Weekly testing

Diesel generators should receive the following measures on a weekly basis:

Air Filter Inspection - Check for debris on the air filter and clean as needed.

Battery charger inspection - Check the floating voltage reading on the battery charger and adjust the voltage as needed.

Fuel filter drain - drain from the bottom of the fuel filter housing.

Fuel Tank Drain - Drain from the bottom of the fuel tank until diesel appears.

Many factories require generator technicians to implement weekly measures based on the generator maintenance checklist. If building maintenance personnel perform these operations, they should have received training in generator maintenance.

Monthly testing measures

Diesel generators should implement the following measures on a monthly basis:

Cooling Liquid Concentration Check - Use a density meter to sample the coolant and refer to the manufacturer's maintenance manual to check its concentration.

Drive Belt Tension Check - Check if the belt tension is appropriate and check for signs of wear.

Discharge condensate - Discharge condensate from the condensate collector.

Battery Check - Check the power of the starting battery and check for loose and corroded connections.

Because the correct concentration of coolant in outdoor generators may be affected by climate, in Carolina, generator technicians specializing in emergency power equipment should perform coolant concentration checks.

Half year inspection measures

Diesel generators should implement the following measures every six months:

Change oil and filter - Change oil and filter, regardless of whether the generator set has been used in non simulated power outages.

Replace coolant filter - Replace coolant filter, regardless of whether the generator set has been used in non simulated power outages.

Cleaning the crankcase respirator - Clean the crankcase respirator according to the manufacturer's maintenance manual.

Air Filter Element Replacement - Replace the air filter element regardless of the degree of debris accumulation.

Radiator hose inspection - Check the connections of the radiator hoses and check for signs of wear.

Replace fuel filter - Replace fuel filter regardless of the degree of sediment accumulation.

Generator technicians should implement the above measures.

Annual measures

Diesel generator maintenance personnel should conduct a thorough annual cleaning of their cooling system.

Conclusion

The above measures are necessary for diesel generators to maintain good condition. By including them in the generator repair or maintenance checklist, you can be prepared for the next power outage.
