Natural gas generators are a viable alternative to diesel generators, especially in critical power applications that require extreme emission regulations. Although they are slightly different from diesel engines, they have more in common. They share over three-quarters of the components, including the engine cylinder block, piston rods, main bearings, crankshaft, and EGR system. This is because it is the elements they do not share that make them so different. Dingbo Power will soon discuss these aspects, but first, let's have a better understanding of what natural gas is.
What is natural gas?
Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases. It is mainly composed of methane, but also contains small amounts of hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and sometimes even helium. For millions of years, the remains of plants and animals have decomposed in underground caves, exposing gases to intense high temperatures and pressures. The energy initially obtained from the sun is stored in gas. It is drilled, transported, refined, and then stored in tanks for future use.
Inhalation
Most of us are familiar with how the intake system of diesel engines operates, if not reading this article. Like diesel engines, natural gas generators utilize exhaust gas circulation (exhaust gas recirculation) and mix air and fuel from the environment. However, due to being in a gaseous state rather than atomized liquid, natural gas engines can utilize stoichiometric combustion, where 100% of the fuel is consumed. This is not only an ideal choice for higher education in terms of power density and increased fuel economy, but also greatly reduces exhaust emissions.
ignition
The ignition process is another key difference between diesel engines and natural gas engines. Because low flammability diesel engines using diesel fuel use extremely high pressure and heat to ignite the fuel mixture. Natural gas engines use a spark plug system similar to gasoline engines. Although special piston head bowls are required for natural gas engines, the high flammability of natural gas means it requires less compression to ignite. Compared to familiar fuel injector diesel engines, natural gas generators use integrated fuel modules.
Waste gas
Due to the lowest 100% carbon and hydrogen fuel during the combustion process, as 100% carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur are burned together with oxygen during the combustion process. This enables them to use three-way catalytic converters similar to those found in gasoline vehicles. The active post-processing system is much simpler than diesel engines, covering diesel particulate filters and selective catalytic reduction components.
Overall, natural gas generators are quieter, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient than diesel generators, making them an ideal choice for critical power sources. Unless the generator is directly connected to the natural gas pipeline, the fuel tank will be expensive and more unstable than diesel fuel, making it difficult to store and transport. For backup services and remote areas with limited or impossible access to natural gas pipelines, diesel generators are usually the best solution.
