Working Principle of Temperature Regulator for 300KW Diesel Generator Set

Diesel generator sets mainly consist of diesel engines, synchronous AC generators, water tanks, integrated control panels, supporting electrical control equipment, and various auxiliary components. The thermostat is the core component of the cooling system of the diesel engine. Its function is to automatically change the amount of water flowing through the water tank radiator according to the load of the diesel generator and the water temperature, ensuring that the diesel generator operates at the optimal temperature. Thermostat failure is also one of the common faults of diesel generator sets. If the thermostat is damaged, it will affect the operation of the diesel generator set.

Since the thermostat plays such an important role in the diesel generator set, what is the working principle of the thermostat of a 300KW diesel generator set? Let's understand it by analyzing the 154-type wax thermostat used in the 135 series diesel engines:

 

When the diesel generator set starts to work, if the temperature of the coolant passing through the thermostat is lower than its starting temperature, the outlet valve of the thermostat closes. All the coolant of the diesel generator set flows back to the inlet of the fresh water pump through the bypass outlet of the thermostat for recirculation, which can quickly increase the water temperature of the diesel generator set. When the temperature of the coolant passing through the thermostat reaches about 76°C, the outlet valve of the thermostat begins to open. At this time, part of the coolant of the diesel generator set flows to the radiator through the outlet valve, and the rest still flows back to the inlet of the fresh water pump through the bypass outlet. When the temperature of the coolant passing through the thermostat reaches about 86°C, the outlet valve of the thermostat is fully opened, and the bypass outlet is completely closed. All the coolant of the diesel generator set flows to the water radiator through the outlet valve. There is a small hole on the outlet valve of the thermostat. When the outlet valve is closed, the air in the system is discharged through this hole.

When it is necessary to check whether the thermostat is working properly, the thermostat can be slowly heated in water, and observe whether the temperature when the outlet valve of the thermostat starts to open and is fully opened, as well as the lift when it is fully opened (8mm), are within the specified range.

 

Two thermostats are used in parallel in the 135 series diesel engines of the diesel generator set. This can increase the passage cross-section of the thermostat and reduce the resistance. During the use process, users should not casually remove the thermostat. When it is found that the thermostat fails, it should be replaced immediately. Otherwise, it is easy to lose control of the coolant temperature and affect the normal operation of the diesel generator set.
