Causes of Valve Foot Noise in Diesel Generator Sets

Sep. 19, 2023

During the use of diesel generator sets, we may encounter the phenomenon of valve foot noise. We need to promptly identify the cause and troubleshoot the problem to restore the normal operation of the unit. Below, we will introduce the causes and specific handling methods of valve foot noise in diesel generator sets for Starlight power generation equipment:

standby genset

Causes of valve foot noise in diesel generator sets

1. Worn valve clearance adjustment screws or rocker arms.

2. Improper adjustment of valve foot clearance or loose adjustment screw locking nut.

3. The valve push rod is deformed.

4. Excessive wear on the cam causes the tappet to jump during operation.

Treatment method for valve foot noise in diesel generator sets

1. Open the valve cover and pinch the valve rocker arm with your hand to feel a relatively large vibration, which is the valve foot noise.

2. The sound of the valve foot does not change with the temperature, but the frequency of the sound changes with the speed. The sound is clear at the valve cover and at idle speed.

3. The single cylinder fuel cut-off test will not affect its sound changes.

4. Press the valve rocker arm with your hand and move it up and down. If the sound weakens or disappears, it indicates excessive clearance between the valve stem and guide tube or between the rocker arm and rocker arm shaft.

5. In order to avoid the interference of fire and knocking sound at low speeds, the diagnosis can be made by quickly retracting the throttle after increasing the speed and listening while the engine slows down.

6. If it has been found that the noise is caused by excessive valve clearance, the clearance should be adjusted.

7. Insert a feeler gauge into the gap, and when the sound disappears, it is the sound of the valve foot.

8. If there is still a sound after adjustment, the wear of the cam (i.e. measuring the top height of the cam) and the deformation of the push rod should be checked. If there is wear or deformation, it should be replaced.

The phenomenon of valve foot sound in diesel generator sets is that when the engine is running at low speed, the upper part emits a rhythmic, clear and uniform "click" sound, and as the speed increases, the sound also increases. Therefore, we need to promptly solve the problem of valve foot noise in diesel generator sets based on the above treatment methods.
