Common Faults Of Diesel Generator Governor

Failure of the governor of the diesel generator may cause instability of the speed of the diesel engine, stalling or speeding. Therefore, careful and correct maintenance and management of the governor and its system are essential. When the abnormal phenomenon during the speed change of diesel generator exposes the governor fault, check whether other factors are eliminated. If the governor of the generator set is still not working properly, the governor itself will fail. The following is a list of common faults of the diesel generator governor.

Fault feature 1: unstable speed (traveling block).

Possible causes:

(1) The oil supply of each cylinder is uneven.

(2) Carbon or oil drips from the fuel injection nozzle hole.

(3) The connecting pin of the gear rod is loose.

(4) The axial clearance of the injection pump camshaft is too large.

(5) The pin hole of flying iron is worn and loose.

(6) The clearance between the adjusting gear rod and the adjusting gear is too large or there are burrs between them.

(7) The adjustment gear rod or accelerator rod does not move flexibly.

(8) There is air in the fuel system.

(9) The flying iron is open or the flying iron seat is not flexible.

(10) Improper adjustment of low speed.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Have the professional maintenance personnel readjust the fuel supply of each cylinder.

(2) Have professional maintenance personnel clean, repair, or replace the fuel injector.

(3) Have the fuel injection pump repaired or replaced by professional maintenance personnel.

(4) Use the fuel hand pump to exhaust air.

(5) Have professional maintenance personnel readjust.

Fault feature 2: the calibrated speed cannot be reached.

Possible causes:

(1) The governor spring is permanently deformed.

(2) The fuel supply of the fuel injection pump is insufficient.

(3) The joystick is not in the maximum speed position.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Have the fuel injection pump repaired or replaced by professional maintenance personnel.

(2) Follow the troubleshooting method for fuel injection pump.

(3) Check and adjust the joystick mechanism.

Fault feature 3: The minimum idle speed cannot be reached.

Possible causes:

(1) The joystick is not fully lowered.

(2) The adjusting gear rod and adjusting gear ring are slightly stuck.

(3) The low speed stabilizer is improperly adjusted.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Have professional maintenance personnel adjust or replace the fuel injection pump.

(2) Have the fuel injection pump repaired or replaced by professional maintenance personnel.

(3) Have professional maintenance personnel adjust.

Fault feature 4: the governor suddenly fails, causing the speed to exceed the calibrated speed by more than 110% (commonly known as runaway).

Possible causes:

(1) The speed is too high.

(2) The adjusting gear rod or accelerator rod is stuck.

(3) The connecting pin between the adjusting gear rod and the accelerator rod falls off.

(4) The accelerator rod screws fall off.

(5) The speed regulating spring is broken or the spring lug falls off.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Emergency shutdown shall be carried out immediately. Shut down the diesel engine by disconnecting the fuel or cutting off the air intake and let the professional maintenance personnel check and repair or replace the fuel injection pump.

(2) Have the fuel injection pump repaired or replaced by professional maintenance personnel.
