Eight Common Faults Of Diesel Generator Electrical System

Nov. 11, 2022

Diesel generators often encounter electrical failures in the process of use. What causes them? How to solve it? Let's share the common faults of the electrical system with Jiangsu Starlight Electricity Equipments Co.,Ltd.

Fault feature 1: the starting motor does not rotate.

Possible causes:

(1) The connecting wire has a poor connection.

(2) The contacts of the magnetic switch are in poor contact.

(3) The brush is in poor contact.

(4) The starting motor is short circuited.

(5) The battery is under charged or the capacity is too small.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Clean and screw the connector head.

(2) Check the switch contacts and sand them.

(3) Clean the commutator meter or replace the brush.

(4) Find out the new parts and repair them. If necessary, replace the starting motor.

(5) Charge the battery or add batteries for parallel use, and replace the battery if necessary.

Fault feature 2: the starting motor has no starting force when idling.

Possible characteristics:

(1) Poor contact or desoldering of brushes and terminals.

(2) The bearing sleeve is worn.

(3) The field winding or armature winding is partially shorted.

(4) The contact of the electromagnetic switch is singed and the contact is poor.

(5) The battery charge is insufficient or the capacity is too small, and the voltage drop of the starting motor circuit is too large.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Clean the surface, re weld or replace.

(2) Renew.

(3) Find out the short circuit and repair it.

(4) Check the switch contacts and sand them.

(5) Charge the battery, replace the battery if necessary, increase the wire section or shorten the wire length.

Fault feature 3: The starter motor gear and the top gear of flywheel ring gear or the starter motor gear cannot be withdrawn.

Possible characteristics:

(1) The starter is not parallel to the center of flywheel ring gear.

(2) The contacts of the electromagnetic switch are burned together.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Reinstall the starter to eliminate the non parallelism.

(2) Check the switch contacts, file and sanding the rough spots.

Fault feature 4: the start button is widened, and the starting motor continues to run.

Possible causes:

(1) The starting electric key or button does not reset.

(2) The electromagnetic switch contact and the connecting screw are burned firmly.

(3) The starting relay is burnt firmly.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Readjust.

(2) Overhaul.

(3) Readjust.

Fault feature 5: The alternator cannot be charged.

Possible causes:

(1) The alternator drive belt is loose.

(2) Poor connection of charging circuit, grounding circuit or battery connector.

(3) The rotor (field coil) has failed.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Adjust the drive belt to the proper tension.

(2) Check all wires and connectors, wipe all connectors clean and tighten them. Replace the wires and connectors as necessary.

(3) Replace the rotor.

Fault feature 6: The voltage of the charging generator is too low or the charging is abnormal.

Possible causes:

(1) The drive belt is loose.

(2) Poor connection of charging circuit, grounding circuit or battery connector.

(3) The alternator voltage regulator is damaged.

(4) The rotor (field coil) has failed.

(5) The rectifier diode is burnt out.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Adjust the drive belt to the proper tension.

(2) Check all wires and connectors, wipe all connectors clean and tighten them. Replace the wires and connectors as necessary.

(3) Replace the voltage regulator.

(4) Replace the rotor.

(5) Replace the rectifier diode.

Fault feature 7: The charging generator voltage is too high.

Possible causes:

(1) The connector on the alternator or the generator voltage regulator has a poor connection.

(2) The alternator voltage regulator has failed.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Tighten all connectors on the alternator or voltage regulator.

(2) Replace the voltage regulator.

Fault feature 8: The generator has abnormal sound.

Possible causes:

(1) The drive belt is worn or damaged.

(2) The drive belt is loose.

(3) The drive belt and belt pulley are not aligned with each other.

(4) The generator bearing is worn.

(5) Bent armature or rotor shaft.

(6) The rectifier element of the generator is short circuited.

Troubleshooting:

(1) Replace the drive belt.

(2) Adjust the drive belt to the proper tension.

(3) Adjust to align the drive belt center with the pouring pulley center.

(4) Replace the generator.

(5) Replace the generator.
