The function of air filter

Air filters are generally divided into filtering (dry) air filters and oil bath air filters. Regardless of the type of air filter, its function is to filter out floating dust and sand particles in the air to prevent mechanical equipment from inhaling air with impurity particles during operation, which can cause wear and damage to diesel generator sets. It is an interception and filtering device. The air filter is arranged in front of the turbocharging system, which can greatly improve the service life of the diesel generator set.

Filter element in air filter

The main components of an air filter are the filter element and the housing, with the filter element being the primary filtering component responsible for filtering gases. Usually, filter cartridges are divided into one large and one small. The larger filter cartridge is called the "main filter cartridge" on the outside, and the smaller filter cartridge is called the "safety filter cartridge" on the inside.

A qualified paper filter cartridge can achieve a full life filtration efficiency of 99.9%. Although there are two paper filters inside and outside, the main filter on the outside plays a filtering role. The main function of the safety filter inside is to block dust from entering the engine and protect the diesel generator set from damage in case of equipment maintenance or other unexpected situations such as main filter failure.

Precautions for using air filters

1. Do not over clean: Cleaning the air filter too frequently will not fully utilize the filtering ability of the filter element, resulting in an increase in the amount of dust entering the diesel generator set, causing abnormal wear of the unit, and early damage to the filter element.

2. The safety filter does not require maintenance or dust cleaning. It is not recommended to remove the safety filter element during maintenance to prevent dust from entering the intake duct (including shutdown). If dust is found on the safety filter element, it is highly likely that the main filter element is damaged and should be replaced immediately.

3. An air filter with a safety filter element is only replaced without maintenance. When the main filter element is found to be damaged, it should be replaced in a timely manner.

4. The maintenance cycle of the air filter should be determined based on the dust content of the working environment. When the resistance alarm sounds, please pay attention to maintenance or refer to the maintenance manual recommended by the generator manufacturer.
