Heat Dissipation Method of Diesel Generator Radiator

May. 20, 2024

When the diesel generator is running, the diesel engine radiator is used for cooling to effectively ensure that it does not generate an over temperature alarm. If it is air-cooled or using other cooling methods (such as heat exchangers), you will not see the radiator.

Poor heat dissipation of diesel generator radiators is common, such as the inability of the fan to rotate at full speed, which is the reason why the coolant does not cool. Secondly, ensure that the radiator fins are not bent or stuck. We have observed that under some harsh environmental conditions, it becomes hot, humid, and dusty, and the radiator fins are easily clogged over time. This blockage may occur for many reasons, which can form a thin insulation layer on the radiator fins and greatly reduce the efficiency of the radiator. So if possible, clean the radiator with a hot water pressure boiler. The third most common cause of this problem is that water is not circulating in the diesel engine, which is caused by the water pump. With the help of an infrared thermometer, the temperature of different parts of the diesel engine can be checked during operation,

Thermostats are usually installed in diesel engine waterways or water pumps, and use radiators to automatically control the coolant flow rate, allowing diesel engines to operate within the normal temperature range.

When the diesel generator is running, heat is generated during the combustion process. A water-cooled diesel generator pumps coolant around the diesel engine during operation and transfers the heat generated to the coolant. The coolant is pumped through a radiator, which has a fan that can blow cool ambient air through the radiator matrix/core. This cold air transfers heat from the coolant to it and then blows it away from the diesel engine.

It is important that the hot air is blown away and not allowed to be recycled back, as this type of hot air will not fully cool the generator.

What are the main components of a diesel generator radiator?

Radiator frame

When the fan blows air through, the frame supports the radiator core and the diesel engine frame vibrates during operation.

Radiator core

This is where cooling occurs. The core is composed of tubes and fins. The coolant flows through the pipe and heat is transferred to the fins. The air blown out by the fan carries heat away from the generator.

Radiator fan (or fan)

The fan completes the task, which can be mechanically driven from the engine crankshaft through pulleys and belts, or electrically driven by an electric motor. There can be multiple fans on the radiator, especially when they are electrically driven.

Expansion water tank/top water tank

The intercooler is essentially the second core of the radiator - in addition to cooling the coolant that flows around the diesel engine, it is used to cool the combustion air after the use of a turbocharger. This type of air becomes denser during cooling, which helps improve combustion and available power.
