How to Change The Engine Speed of Perkins Generators?

Jul. 08, 2024

Does my 1103, 1104, or 1106 Perkins engine have an electronic or mechanical governor or ECU?

This article only covers the mechanical 1103, 1104, and 1106 engines of the Perkins 1100 series. If your engine has a mechanical governor, you can use simple tools to change the speed. If you have an engine with an electronic governor, you will need Perkins LC governor software to change the speed. If your engine has an ECU, you will need a Perkins dealer or OEM to install Perkins EST software.

To know if your engine has a mechanical or electronic governor, you need to find the fuel injection pump. On the Perkins 1100 series, mechanical engines have a throttle screw installed on top of the pump. For engines controlled by electronic governors, they have an LC governor installed on top of the pump.

For an ECU controlled engine, you will see an ECU installed on the side of the engine.

How to use a mechanical governor to change the speed of my Perkins 1100 series?

Before considering gear changes, please carefully consider the following points. If you are unsure, you should seek the help of professionals, such as Perkins dealers.

Changing the speed of the generator will result in a change in the frequency of the power output.

You can make speed adjustments (minor adjustments) or rated value adjustments (from 1500 rpm 50Hz to 1800 rpm 60Hz).

When you replace a mechanical diesel engine, there is no guarantee that you will receive the rated values on the rating chart/specification sheet. If you need to ensure power, you should order the correct rating or electronically switchable rating from your local Perkins dealer.

If you are switching ratings, you should always ensure that the rating you need is actually available, rather than all engines being able to operate at all ratings. Please consult your local dealer.

If you have an AC generator, you may need to adjust the UFRO and overspeed protection of the automatic voltage regulator. Before changing the speed, please consult the equipment manufacturer.

After checking the above points, you can change the speed as follows:

This picture shows the throttle screw at the top of the fuel pump.

Run the engine without load.

To adjust the speed, first loosen the nuts (3 and 4). If not done, it may cause damage.

Once loosened, adjust the screw (5) clockwise to increase speed or counterclockwise to decrease speed. For operation at 50Hz, set the speed to 52.5Hz, and for 60Hz, it is approximately 63 Hz. When the unit is fully loaded, it will operate at a frequency of 60Hz due to drooping of the governor.

Tighten the two nuts again.

Then, the engine is set to the desired speed. You can stop the engine now.
