How to Install a Generator for Your Home or Business?

May. 08, 2024

Running a diesel generator set will generate a certain amount of noise, and measures should be taken to significantly reduce the noise and diesel exhaust. If possible, you should choose to be downwind of your home or company, so that diesel smoke will be carried away from people and buildings by prevailing winds. The reasonable distance between your home or business and the generator casing (combined with sound insulation measures) will reduce any noise pollution.

Generator installation

The diesel generator is very heavy and should be placed on a solid level surface. The ideal solution is to pour approximately 4 inches thick reinforced concrete slabs. The tablet should be large enough to accommodate the generator and fuel tank. There should be enough space to walk around the generator for maintenance and repair of the machine, and a brick wall enclosure should be built around the generator (the oil tank should not be placed inside this enclosure).

Before pouring the board, a trench (18 inches deep is ideal) should be dug between the generator board and the connection point near the main power/distribution board in the building, close to the location of your transfer switch. The laying size of pipeline engineering should be sufficient to accommodate cables and generator control lines (at least 25 millimeters of cable per 100 amperes of power supply). The pipeline engineering should start from the vertical feed through the floor slab, and attention should be paid to ensuring that there is no 90 degree bending. Any bending should be gentle, so that the cable will not get stuck or tripped when passing through. When laying pipelines, you should pass a sturdy rope through the pipeline, which will be used to pull the generator cables in the future.

After pouring the concrete slab, before backfilling the trench, a few inches of concrete should be poured along the trench at the top of the pipeline project, which will help prevent future cable damage.

Generator casing

Diesel generator sets are highly sensitive to extreme high temperatures and humidity, and require protection to prevent both from becoming excessive. The best way to achieve this is to build a customized casing around the generator set.

The design of the casing should allow for maximum airflow while reducing the chance of moisture infiltration. Water infiltration into the AC generator is one of the main reasons for generator burnout, and this situation can be largely avoided through the design of the casing.

A simple brick wall supports the tile roof of a metal frame, which is a good basic structure. The roof should be lined with heat reflective materials to prevent excessive radiation heat penetration (painting the roof and walls white will also reflect some radiation heat). The eaves of the roof should be as low as possible to prevent rainwater from being blown into the fence in strong winds; Wide doors, such as 22 inch or 24 inch doors, should be installed for operators to enter and maintain.

Air is sucked in through the rear of the generator and discharged through the radiator in front of the generator. In order to allow a sufficient amount of air to be sucked in through the generator casing, the last layer of blocks on the top of the rear block wall of the generator should be decorative with holes on the blocks. The generator will draw in air through this layer of blocks, and the hot air discharged through the radiator should be directly transported to the front of the generator through a simple pipeline system between the surface of the radiator and other decorative blocks on the wall. All decorative blocks should be lined with fine plastic or metal mesh material on the inner side of the generator casing to prevent insects from entering the generator casing.

The walls, doors, and ceilings should be lined with sound-absorbing materials, which will significantly reduce the noise signal of the generator set. If noise remains a problem, other solutions include: building hollow walls opposite a single wall, or installing baffles around decorative blocks (air flow in) and radiators (air flow out). These measures will further reduce noise characteristics. If reducing noise is an absolute priority, purchasing a quiet box type silent generator and installing it in a generator box type housing with soundproof lining is the correct approach.

For the purpose of generator maintenance and service, sufficient lighting and additional power sockets should be installed inside the casing. If possible, water should be supplied to the outside of the casing and a hose (for the top of the radiator) should be installed.
