How to Maintain The Carbon Brush of Diesel Generator Set? 1

Oct. 18, 2024

In recent years, with the rapid development of the national economy and uneven distribution of resources, the phenomenon of power shortage in some areas has led to the widespread installation and application of self owned diesel generator sets in various industries. However, due to the lack of carbon brush operation and maintenance technology for generator excitation systems, there have been increasing reports of shutdown accidents caused by carbon brush or rotor collector ring failures.

The hazards of electric brush faults in diesel generator sets are not uncommon

One day, two large generator sets in a power plant experienced carbon brush breakage on their rotor slip rings, leading to an emergency load reduction and replacement of the carbon brushes, but to no avail. Subsequently, a slip ring fire occurred and the unit was forced to disconnect.

Recently, the QFS-125 generator set of a power plant in Northwest China Power Grid experienced an emergency shutdown due to a carbon brush ring fire in the commutator of the excitation machine;

After the 300000 kilowatt generator set of a power plant in Jiangnan was put into operation, it only underwent one major overhaul. Shortly after a minor repair, the carbon brushes on the inner ring of the generator's collector ring (near the generator side) were severely worn and replaced in batches for multiple consecutive shifts. At the same time, it was found that the brush holder of the generator's collector ring had serious oil stains. After infrared thermometer detection, it was found that the temperature at the contact area between the inner ring of the collector ring and the carbon brush was as high as 230 ℃~360 ℃, while the temperature of the outer ring of the collector ring near the exciter side was normal at 60 ℃~70 ℃. After the unit load dropped to 200000 kW, there was still no sign of a temperature drop in the collector ring, and it was forced to be disconnected for emergency repair.

The repeated occurrence of carbon brush accidents has caused huge economic losses to power plants and power systems, as well as to electricity consuming enterprises. Therefore, users must treat the maintenance of carbon brushes in diesel generator sets correctly, reduce the occurrence of carbon brush failures, not only to reduce economic losses, but also for the safety of enterprise production.
