Operation Steps for Replacing Carbon Brushes in Diesel Generator Sets

Oct. 18, 2024

Carbon brush is an important component of diesel generator set, which can achieve current reversal through a converter to ensure smooth operation of the diesel generator set. Generally, after a period of use, the carbon brush of the diesel generator set will be worn flat. Therefore, users should regularly replace the carbon brush of the generator, otherwise the set is prone to failure during operation. However, some users may find that replacing the carbon brush with a new one does not work. Based on years of experience, Dingbo Power tells you that you may not have done some operation steps properly when replacing the carbon brush.

1. The height of the carbon brush of a diesel generator set is generally around 20mm. If the wear of the carbon brush is less than half of the original height, it should be replaced with a new one in a timely manner.

2. After replacing the diesel generator with a new brush, in order to ensure good contact between the carbon brush and the commutator, it is necessary to ensure that the contact area between the working surface of the brush and the commutator is at least 75%, and there should be no jamming in the brush holder.

3. If it is found that the contact surface does not meet the requirements after inspection, a "0" fine sandpaper pad can be used to grind the working surface of the electric brush on the surface of the commutator, grinding it into a circular arc shape. Place a piece of fine glass sandpaper between the carbon brush and the commutator, and under normal spring pressure, grind the carbon brush in the direction of motor rotation. The sandpaper should stick tightly to the commutator as much as possible until the carbon brush arc surface matches. Then remove the sandpaper, blow off the dust with compressed air, and wipe it clean with a soft cloth.

4. The fixing screws of the electric brush wire should be tightened without any looseness.

5. The pressure of the electric brush spring should be (130 ± 25) kPa, otherwise the electric brush spring should be replaced or adjusted.

6. The electric brush holder should be securely fastened on the rear cover, and no looseness is allowed.

When replacing carbon brushes, pay attention to the above six points, and there is no need to worry about the carbon brushes not working. At the same time, Top Power recommends that you choose the original model when purchasing carbon brushes. At the same time, the carbon brushes of diesel generator sets should not be mixed old and new, and it is best to replace them all at once, otherwise it may cause uneven current distribution during the operation of the diesel generator set.
