How contractors make concrete pads for generators

Before installing the generator, you need to collaborate with licensed professionals who can build a concrete foundation. Planning is just a part of the process. Before starting, you need to ensure that there are multiple steps for zoning and construction approval, including building a concrete pad that can be tailored to your situation and needs.

1. Create a base

The first step in building a concrete cushion layer is to create a foundation. Once you have decided on a solid foundation, the concrete renovation team will dig a hole at least four inches deep, the size of which is equivalent to your slab. Most contractors use frames and conduct measurements to ensure the correct foundation dimensions.

This part of the process also includes adding a layer of gravel to the soil and compacting it onto the ground. This will establish a strong foundation for the concrete pad, allowing it to safely stay in place.

2. Mixing concrete

The next step requires a hoe, a handcart, and some safety devices to mix concrete. Trained professionals use gloves, masks, and goggles to protect their skin and eyes from burns, while concrete remains wet.

Then, the concrete trimmer adds water to the concrete mixture and trims it with a hoe until the mixture becomes wet and shiny. If the mixture begins to become too flowing or too thin, additional dry mixture may be required to ensure proper curing.

3. Pour concrete into the base

Before adding concrete to the foundation, professionals need to use wooden frames to lining the foundation, so that the mixture maintains its shape when dry. A regular concrete slab is approximately 4 to 5 inches thick, so the frame should be high enough to accommodate it.

Then, the spraying machine pours the concrete onto the base, completely covering the gravel below. They will continue to pour concrete until it is level with the wooden frame around the foundation.

4. Smooth and shape the concrete

The next step in this process is to iron the wet concrete to ensure its flatness. This can handle any lumps or excess concrete so that the generator can be placed correctly on top. It is easy to scrape off excess parts on a long board or a tool with straight edges.

After leveling the concrete, professional construction personnel will also smooth it out. The design of concrete trowels is to make the surface smooth and eliminate defects in the cushion layer. After flattening and completing the design, the construction personnel use a trimming trowel to shape beautiful concrete edges.

5. Let the concrete set

The final part of the process is to spray the concrete pad and let it solidify. In most cases, this takes a week. Once the soil cushion solidifies and dries, your contractor can remove the wooden frame from the edge and install your generator. With a solid concrete cushion underneath, your generator will have a safer and more stable environment to provide the electricity you need.
