If you want to achieve better performance from a Cummins generator set, the engine must be maintained in an optimal mechanical condition. The maintenance department needs to obtain a daily operation report from the operator, schedule necessary adjustments, and pre-arrange more comprehensive maintenance work for the Cummins diesel generator set according to the requirements indicated in the report. Comparing and correctly interpreting the engine's daily operation report and then taking practical measures will eliminate most malfunctions and obviate the need for emergency repairs.
Primary Maintenance Inspection Items for Cummins Diesel Generator Sets
1.Before starting the Cummins diesel generator set, check the engine oil level. Some oil dipsticks have two markings: the high-level mark "H" and the low-level mark "L". The oil level should neither be higher than the "H" position nor lower than the "L" position. Otherwise, it will cause incomplete combustion of the engine oil, generate a large amount of carbon deposits, accelerate the wear of the piston and cylinder liner, as well as the valve and valve seat. In severe cases, it may even cause the piston ring to seize, seriously affecting the normal operation of the diesel engine, increasing operating costs, and potentially leading to damage to the Cummins diesel generator set in the long run, and exacerbating environmental pollution. Do not ignore the situation of an overly high oil level. Instead, it should be promptly inspected and rectified.
2.Check the oil level using the oil dipstick on the generator. To obtain an accurate reading, check the oil level 15 minutes after the engine has stopped. The oil dipstick should be paired with the original oil pan. Try to keep the oil level as close as possible to the high "H" mark. Note that under no circumstances should the engine be operated when the oil level is lower than the low "L" mark or higher than the high "H" mark.
3.The engine coolant level should be topped up to maintain the cooling system full to the operating level. Check the coolant level daily or each time when refueling, and investigate the cause of coolant consumption. The coolant level can only be checked after the engine has cooled down.
4.Check whether the belt is loose. If there is belt slippage, adjustments should be made. The main reasons for a loose belt are usually that the engine belt has aged and become loose over time, or that the screws have become loose, causing the belt to appear loose even though it is actually in normal condition.
5.After ensuring the above conditions are normal, start the machine and conduct the following inspections: lubricating oil pressure; power output; whether the coolant and engine oil temperatures are normal; whether the engine sound is normal; the exhaust condition of the unit; coolant, fuel, or lubricating oil consumption; and fuel, coolant, or lubricating oil leaks.
