When you choose a diesel generator, its protection grade also is an important factor that you should consider.

What is protection grade?

Protection grade also called ingress protection( IP), this system is written by IEC ( international electrotechnical commission), indicating the level of dust-proof and moisture-proof of electrical equipment. Protection grade consists of two number, the bigger the number is, the higher the level of protection.

Indicating methods:

The protection grade usually is indicated by IP and two number, the number indicates the protection level.

The first number indicates the range of dust resistance of the equipment, or the extent to which people are protected from hazards in a sealed environment. Represents a level to prevent solid foreign bodies from entering, the highest level is 6.

The second number indicates the degree of waterproofing of the equipment. Represents the level of water intake prevention. The highest level is 8.

2	Prevent the invasion of solid objects larger than 12.5mm in diameter	Prevent people's fingers from touching parts inside electrical appliances, and prevent medium size foreign objects (diameter is larger than 12.5mm) from intruding into them.
3	Prevent the invasion of solid objects larger than 2.5 mm in diameter	Prevent tools, wires and similar small objects with diameters or thicknesses larger than 2.5mm from intruding into parts inside electrical appliances.
4	Prevent the invasion of solid objects larger than 1.0 mm in diameter	Prevent tools, wires and similar small objects with diameters or thicknesses larger than 1.0mm from intruding into parts inside electrical appliances.
5	Prevent foreign objects and dust	Completely prevent foreign invasion, although not completely prevent dust invasion, but the amount of dust invasion will not affect the normal operation of electrical appliances.

The second number after IP indicates waterproof grade

1	Prevent water droplet immersion	Vertical droplets (such as condensate) do not damage electrical appliances
2	When the inclination is 15 degrees, water droplets can still be prevented from immersing.	When the electrical appliances are tilted from vertical to 15 degrees, dripping will not cause damage to the electrical appliances.
3	Prevent spraying water immersion	Rain proof or prevent damage caused by water sprayed in a direction less than 60 degrees perpendicular to the electrical appliances
4	Prevent splashing water immersion	Prevent water from splashing in all directions intruding into electrical appliances, which causes damage.
5	Prevent immersion of sprayed water	Prevent low pressure sprinklers lasting at least 3 minutes
6	Prevent big waves immersion	Prevent large sprinklers lasting at least three minutes
7	Prevent immersion of water during immersion	Prevent 30-minute immersion in water up to 1 meter deep
8	When sinking, prevent water immersion	Prevent the effect of continuous immersion in water with a depth of more than 1 meter. Accurate conditions are specified by the manufacturer for each device.

We should choose the suitable generator according the working situation.

In generally, the commons protection grade is IP21, IP23, IP44, IP54, IP55, IP56, IP65. Different protection grade of generator is suitable for different working situation. Most of them are used in dry and clean industrial and mining enterprises. In addition to inflammable and explosive gases, dust, humidity and other special environments, the actual use of "IP23" level of protection is OK, there is no need to use a higher level of protection.

There is internal and external ventilated heat window on end cap and seat of IP23 generator, this kind of generator is suitable used in clean, dry and ventilated environment. But some customers chose this kind of generator without considering the suitable conditions of the generator.

Especially in the environment with conductive dust, it is quite unsafe to use this kind of generator. Once the conductive dust enters the generator winding, it will affect the ventilation and heat dissipation of the generator winding. At the same time, it will easily lead to short-circuit electrical fault, which will seriously affect the service life of the generator. Therefore, when choose generator, it must match the actual operating conditions.
