The Causes of Malfunctions in Commercial Diesel Generators

Jun. 05, 2024

Understanding why commercial diesel generators malfunction is crucial, but more importantly, you need to understand how to solve this problem, and even better, prevent it from happening.

Commercial diesel generators have high power output to support larger facilities in the event of power outages. Sometimes power outages are caused by overloaded power plants, planned power outages of local utilities, damaged transmission lines, natural or man-made disasters, and even severe weather conditions. Most commercial units are diesel, or natural gas, large engines, durable metals, and components capable of outputting high wattage.

Take a look at the most common faults and how to perform preventive maintenance to better understand the problems and solutions of diesel generators.

Lack of diesel or water pollution.

If your backup generator is a diesel engine and seems to have no fuel, it may be because the fuel level gauge is inaccurate. The fuel supply of generators is usually stagnant, and the proportion of fuel capacity used by equipment is relatively low. The instrument sometimes gets stuck in a certain position until the vibration kicks it away.

If necessary, you should also spend some time refueling your fuel tank. When fuel is insufficient, a low liquid level alarm will trigger a fault alarm, and even completely shut down the generator. When the fuel is depleted, the standby diesel generator system shuts down at a critical fuel level or low level to prevent the equipment from inhaling air.

If you have run out of fuel because the fuel filter is clogged, you can prevent this situation by repairing the fuel tank and checking for dust and water.

When it comes to diesel from any machine, water does not pollute the fuel supply. Water in the fuel or a small amount of water can damage the diesel engine and affect the performance of the generator. Water generates early ignition, and its special properties also generate accelerated impact. Filter blockage can flush the pipeline to remove liquid.

You can also use fuel stabilizers to protect diesel from the influence of moisture. Regularly sample the fuel to check for color changes and odors. As is well known, diesel can absorb particles and trace metals in storage tanks, and over time, diesel will deteriorate. Although it is not a panacea, it can help solve these problems, including fuel stabilizers and treatment methods, including fuel polishing technology.

Automatic operation not set.

When dealing with backup generators (also known as backup generators), these generators are usually matched with ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch). When the power supply to the main public grid is cut off, the ATS will prompt the generator to start. This can eliminate the need for on-site manpower, and the generator should run automatically according to your customization and preset configuration.

Human error often causes your generator to fail to operate automatically. When someone presses the emergency stop button or sends the generator for maintenance, the generator set to automatic operation may shut down. Before each use of the therapeutic device, carefully check whether the main controller is set to automatic operation.

Certain positions on the control switch can also trigger an alarm. For example, unset alarms and switching devices mean that the generator is not automatically set. If the main control switch or reset position is turned off, and the circuit breaker is opened or the emergency stop button is pressed, an alarm may be triggered, leading to startup failure.

When the fault stops, several backup brands and models can short-circuit or trip the circuit breaker. When the device is turned off, you must press the reset button to clear the alarm. Does your generator have a ground fault sensor? It is equally important to familiarize yourself with your sensors, as they are also important.
