Three Types of Generator Oil Tanks

Feb. 27, 2024

There are usually three types of generator oil tanks:

1. Auxiliary base oil tank.

If you want to store less than 3785 liters of fuel, you need a secondary base fuel tank. The auxiliary base oil tank, as the name suggests, is installed above the ground but under the base of the generator set.

The cross section of the auxiliary bottom tank is rectangular and is a double walled tank body. This can prevent fuel from overflowing in the event of a leak. These two storage tanks should be constructed with large-sized welded steel. Some pipelines and accessories are connected to the main oil tank, and the important ones are the supply and return oil, exhaust port, emergency pressure reducing valve, and high and low oil level alarm. The filling system inside the tank must be designed to prevent overflow during the filling process. When the tank is filled to 95%, the inlet valve will automatically close. After installation, the main fuel tank is tested at 5 psig and the secondary fuel tank is tested at 3 psig.

2. Underground storage tanks.

If you need to store more than 3785 liters of fuel, you can choose an underground storage tank or an above ground storage tank. Installing underground storage tanks is relatively expensive, but due to isolation from the environment, their lifespan is longer. This underground storage tank can be made of fiberglass. The tank body usually has a ribbed structure to provide structural strength. In addition, underground storage tanks can also be made of steel, but with appropriate cathodic protection to prevent groundwater corrosion. Similarly, the pipeline from the underground storage tank to the generator can be made of fiberglass or cathodic protection steel.

Leakage and overflow of underground oil tank systems may be costly and difficult to correct. This system must be equipped with anti overflow devices and programs. If the worst-case scenario is, the spilled or leaked fuel should be controlled within a restricted area and an underground storage tank should be installed. In this way, the underground area is surrounded by cement floors and walls. After the installation of the underground storage tank, the external area will be filled with sand and gravel.

3. Ground fuel storage tank.

As the name suggests, these fuel tanks are installed on the ground. Although the two types of oil storage tanks are structurally similar to underground storage tanks, their installation procedures differ greatly. The reason is that to minimize the danger, different factors need to be considered. Ground storage tanks pose a fire hazard and there is a risk of spreading to nearby facilities. So, these containers must be installed at the minimum specified distance from other devices. To prevent leakage and overflow, it is necessary to build dams around the above ground storage tanks. In general, the free volume enclosed by a cofferdam is 110% of the tank capacity. Ground storage tanks also need to be equipped with a suitable protective structure to prevent them from being affected by climate conditions.

It is worth noting that the generator oil tank and supporting pipeline system need to meet the qualified standards before they can be put into use. It is not only a requirement for industrial enterprises, but also a need for household and commercial fuel tanks. So users who use generator oil tanks need to find qualified manufacturers to purchase. The fuel tank configured by Dingbo Electric meets environmental and safety requirements, allowing you to use it with peace of mind and worry.
