Types of Starting Batteries for Diesel Generator Sets

The battery is a specialized power source for starting diesel engines, and is an essential starting battery for Yuchai diesel generator sets. So, what are the types of starting batteries for diesel generator sets?

Classified by battery maintenance status

 

(1) Low maintenance battery: The English symbol for low maintenance battery is LF, and its internal structure is not much different from ordinary lead-acid batteries, only with more advanced technology and more reasonable structure. In use, the electrolyte height is generally checked once a year. If it is insufficient, distilled water should be added (note: only distilled water can be added, electrolyte cannot be added, otherwise it will cause excessive electrolyte density and damage to the battery). Other precautions for use can refer to the relevant usage regulations for ordinary lead-acid batteries.

 

(2) Maintenance free battery: Maintenance free: The English symbol for the battery is MF. Due to its structural advantages, maintenance free batteries consume very little electrolyte and do not require the addition of distilled water during their service life. It also has the characteristics of shock resistance, high temperature resistance, small size, and low self discharge. The service life is generally 2-4 times that of ordinary batteries.

 

There are also two types of maintenance free batteries:

1. After adding electrolyte at the time of purchase, no maintenance is required during use (adding supplementary solution);

2. The battery itself is already filled with electrolyte and sealed when it leaves the factory, so users cannot add supplementary liquid at all.

 

Classification of lead-acid batteries based on the state of charge of the plates

(1) Non charged type: The storage period of the non charged type battery is when the electrode plate is in a non charged state and the battery has no electrolyte. Electrolyte should be added and initially charged before use. Ordinary lead-acid batteries belong to the category of unloaded batteries.

 

(2) Dry charged type: Its full name is dry charged lead-acid battery, and its main feature is that the negative plate has a high storage capacity. In a completely dry state, it can store the obtained electricity for two years. The dry charged lead-acid battery has already activated the plates when it leaves the factory, and only needs to be filled with standard density electrolyte when in use. After 20-30 minutes, it can be used.

 

(3) Wet charged type: A battery with wet plates during storage that maintains its charge is called a wet charged battery. Wet charged batteries have slightly different manufacturing processes compared to dry charged batteries, and their storage and charge retention time is also shorter. Wet charged batteries can be used within the storage period (about 6 months) by adding electrolyte of standard density to the specified height, and the initial discharge capacity can reach 80% of the rated capacity. Wet charged batteries with a storage period of about one year can discharge 50% of their rated capacity immediately after being filled with electrolyte. Recharge wet charged batteries before use to achieve their rated capacity. Wet charged batteries are suitable for situations that do not require long-term storage.

 

(4) Liquid carrying type: During storage, the battery is electrified and in a charged state. Classified by electrolyte state

 

(5) Rich liquid type: Rich liquid type is relative to poor liquid type, which means there is a large amount of acidic water in the battery. Also known as "rich liquid lead-acid battery".

 

(6) Poor liquid type: This type of battery is called valve regulated sealed lead-acid battery, marked as VRLA in English. All the electrolyte inside it is adsorbed on the diaphragm and electrode plate, and the diaphragm is in a 90% saturated state. There is no free electrolyte inside, which will not cause electrolyte overflow. There is no need to add blended electrolyte, and it can be used in any position. This type of battery belongs to maintenance free batteries.
