What Is The Fault Of Excessive Oil Consumption Of Diesel Generator Set

Oil is indispensable for diesel generators. However, sometimes we find that oil consumption is too large. The oil consumption is too large, the oil level drops significantly every day, and the exhaust emits blue smoke. What is the reason?

I. Fault cause:

1. There is oil leakage: such as oil leakage from crankshaft rear bearing oil seal, oil leakage due to damage of timing gear cover oil seal or improper installation, oil leakage due to poor sealing of camshaft rear end cover and other gasket damage or oil leakage due to looseness and fracture of oil pipe joint, etc.

2. The seal ring of the compressor impeller shaft of the exhaust turbocharger fails.

3. The valve guide sealing cap is damaged, or the clearance between the inlet valve stem and the guide is too large.

4. The piston, piston ring and cylinder wall are excessively worn, which increases the fitting clearance between them, causing oil to enter the combustion chamber and participate in combustion.

5. Incorrect installation of piston ring: the piston ring is aligned or stuck in the ring groove, making it inelastic. The twist ring or cone ring is installed reversely to pump oil to the combustion chamber.

II. Troubleshooting:

1. Check the oil leakage: if there is oil dripping outward from the flywheel edge or the rear end of the oil pan, it is oil leakage from the rear oil seal of the crankshaft. If the oil flows outward from the camshaft rear end cover along the cylinder block, it means that the camshaft rear end cover is not tightly sealed and leaks oil. If the oil is thrown out of the crankshaft pulley, it indicates that the gasket of the timing gear cover is damaged or the oil leaks due to improper installation. If other gaskets or oil pipe joints are loose and broken and oil leakage occurs, it can be seen from the appearance that there is oil leakage. Check whether the connecting screws or oil pipe joints are loose and whether the gaskets are broken.

2. If the exhaust emits blue smoke, it means that the engine oil is sucked into the cylinder for combustion and then discharged. First, check whether there is oil in the intake pipe. If there is oil, it means that the seal ring of the compressor impeller shaft of the exhaust turbocharger is invalid, and the oil flows into the air inlet along the shaft. Replace the seal ring. If the air inlet pipe is dry and free of oil, check whether the valve guide sealing cap is in good condition, and whether the clearance between the inlet valve rod and the guide pipe is too large, and replace it for maintenance.

If the above conditions are all good, then remove the cylinder head and oil pan, conduct a comprehensive inspection and measurement of the cylinder, piston and piston ring, check whether the wear of the piston, piston ring and cylinder wall is excessive, whether the assembly clearance is too large, and whether the piston ring is installed correctly, so as to eliminate the fault.
