What is the load of a diesel generator?

backup power generator

The load on a diesel generator is the power consumed by the equipment. In home applications, the load will be items in your home, such as lights, heating, AC power, refrigerator, cookware, phone charger, or TV.

In industrial applications, loads may be process heaters, lighting, coolers, fans, or other electric motors. The sum of all power requirements for any application is the total load. The generator needs to be able to handle the applied load.

Each generator has a different response to a given load and is currently running. The engine will react as the speed decreases, and the voltage at the terminals of the AC generator will decrease.

What is the load on the AC generator? What is the load on the engine?

The engine will react based on the active power measured in KW.

The AC generator will react based on the plotted current and power factor. This is called kVa, which is the vector sum of kW and reactive load KVAR.

When you apply a load to a diesel generator, the components of the generator assembly will respond to steady-state changes and the amount of load applied. The AC AC generator will simultaneously enter the load application through the voltage on the terminals. When a diesel engine is loaded, its speed will decrease.

Although diesel generators operate without load, the engine can rotate the AC generator very freely because there is almost no resistance in the magnetic field.

In order to increase the size of the load beyond negligible, you can hear a change in engine sound, as the speed initially decreases and then recovers, assuming there is no engine overload now. In a stable state, the engine governor controls the speed of the engine to prevent it from being uncontrollable or reducing its rated speed too far. Due to the application or removal of a load, the operation of the governor is to return the engine to its rated speed. It achieves this by adjusting the actuator that controls the engine fuel supply.

At a load level greater than zero, the engine will have a higher maximum load peak at the sound level. This additional sound energy comes from larger diesel and air explosions in the engine cylinder. As the magnetic field between the main rotor and stator changes, the chemical energy in the fuel is converted into additional mechanical energy to rotate the AC generator, increasing its resistance to turning. The engine will consume more fuel, require more air, and generate more heat from the combustion process.

Compared to AC generators, the voltage dip angle can usually only be detected using a few meters or by monitoring the generator control panel. If the voltage dip angle is large, due to the large applied load, the light may flash and sensitive electronic devices may be reduced or damaged by the voltage. The AVR and excitation system of the AC generator will react to increase the flow of current to the main rotor, thereby generating an increase in voltage on the main stator and generator terminals.

Due to the direct coupling between the engine and the AC generator. The change in engine speed will directly affect the frequency of the AC current being generated by the AC generator.
