Backup Generator for Medical Laboratory Use

Aug. 22, 2024

When it comes to backup generators, most people think of commercial facilities and industrial applications, but there are also many medical facilities that rely on reliable power in the event of a power outage. Although backup generators are widely used in hospitals and better living centers/elderly communities, medical laboratories are also an industry that requires backup power sources. Medical laboratories, such as those researching vaccines, new diseases, drugs, medical treatments, or processing laboratory samples, are considered mission critical applications that require 100% normal operating time. Although many industries have certain requirements for backup power sources, medical laboratories have very special conditions that must be met to ensure operational safety.

Temperature control storage in these facilities is absolutely critical, including any critical systems and laboratory equipment that may be required for testing, sample processing, and recording research.

Medical laboratories that handle samples, examine specimens, or conduct research typically require temperature controlled environments, especially during storage. If there is a power outage, fluctuating temperatures may alter or even damage any samples or specimens exposed to higher temperatures.

When it comes to medical laboratories involved in the manufacturing, production, storage, or management of vaccines, the requirements become even stricter. Many vaccines require strict temperature control to prevent spoilage. Most vaccines are sensitive to fluctuating temperatures, and some even require freezing and thawing before injection. If a vaccine that must be kept frozen begins to completely thaw due to a power outage, the vaccine is likely to lose its effectiveness and be considered unusable, which will require handling of spoiled vaccines. Generally speaking, unmonitored vaccine storage temperatures can have a negative impact on overall vaccine safety, leading to vaccine dose loss.

When the vaccine cannot be kept within the required temperature range, this is called a 'cold chain failure'. Cold chain specifically refers to safe handling practices, including any materials, equipment, and procedures, to ensure that vaccines are maintained within a specific temperature range from production to patient use. When the chain breaks in any way, it is considered a 'cold chain failure'. Although doctors and inappropriate refrigeration equipment are often considered as broken links in the chain, power outages and power shutdowns are often overlooked.

If there is a power outage, two situations can occur. The first method is to install a backup generator on site to provide power in the event of a power outage or malfunction. The second method is to transfer the vaccine to another place with electricity. It should be noted that transferring vaccines has its own obstacles, as the transportation process is very complex. This includes ensuring appropriate refrigerated containers, the space required for the required amount of vaccine, the number of ice packs needed to keep the vaccine below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the length of time the vaccine is in transit, and how to handle the boxes. Then, the vaccine packaging must be carefully opened and left in its original packaging, as removing the vaccine from the original packaging exposes it to room temperature and light, which can have a negative impact on the efficacy of the vaccine.

When it comes to protecting your storage supply and maintenance operations, a backup generator may be a powerful solution. During long-term power outages, backup generators can provide several days of electricity consumption based on fuel type and generator configuration. When equipped with ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch), the backup generator can operate within a few seconds after turning off the power. When the main power grid resumes power supply, ATS will disconnect the motor power supply and reconnect the facility to the main power grid.

When it comes to backup generators for large facilities, commercial or industrial grade generators can be installed on-site and can provide backup power almost immediately in the event of a power outage. For small facilities that cannot install generators on site, it is advisable to take necessary steps to rent portable generators.

In addition to generators, there are also backup batteries or dedicated refrigerators on the market to ensure that vaccines can be kept in a temperature controlled environment, thereby avoiding concerns about transferring vaccines to another location. The key is to find a solution that meets your needs.
