Cause Analysis of Generator Overheating Fault

The overheating failure of the generator set during operation will not only lead to a decrease in the power of the generator set, but also leave hidden dangers to the failure of the generator set. In severe cases, vicious failures such as cylinder pulling, sticking, tile burning, and piston burning may occur. Therefore, users must take this situation seriously. Starlight power generation equipment analysis believes that there are two main reasons for the overheating of the generator set: one is the blockage of the heat dissipation, cooling, and lubrication system, which causes the diesel engine to overheat; the other is the leakage of the cooling system and the lubricating oil system, which causes the unit to overheat.

1. The blockage of heat dissipation, cooling and lubrication system causes the unit to overheat

(1) The radiator or pipeline is blocked. Once the radiator and pipeline are blocked, the cooling water cannot circulate, and the generator set will overheat.

(2) The exhaust pipe is blocked. When the exhaust pipe is blocked, the exhaust gas is not discharged smoothly when the generator set is running, and a part of the exhaust gas is stored in the cylinder. When the intake is in the next intake stroke, because there is more exhaust gas in the cylinder, fresh oil and gas are mixed. Qi cannot come in fully. When the spark plug is ignited, the flame propagation and burning speed are slow, and the burning time is very long, forming afterburning. The parts in contact with the gas burn for a long time and cannot absorb the heat, thus causing overheating. At the same time, because the exhaust gas is not smoothly discharged, the temperature of the exhaust gas rises significantly when exhausting, and the heat load of the entire unit increases, causing the generator set to overheat.

(3) The oil filter is blocked. Under normal circumstances, the oil of the generator set enters the diesel engine through the oil filter. Once the oil filter is blocked, the oil can only enter the various lubrication points of the diesel engine through the bypass passage. In this way, because the oil is not filtered, it is easy to block the oil pipeline and cause poor lubrication. The oil pipeline is blocked, and the heat generated by the friction couple cannot be dissipated, causing the generator set to overheat.

(4) The oil filter is blocked. The oil filter screen is set at the inlet of the oil absorber in the oil pan to remove bubbles and prevent larger debris from entering the oil pump. Once the oil filter is blocked, the supply of lubricating oil to the generator set will be interrupted, which will cause dry friction on the friction couple of the set, which will cause the generator set to overheat.

2. The cooling system and lubricating oil system leaked, causing the unit to overheat

(1) Water leakage in the radiator or pipeline. The radiator or pipeline is leaking, and the generator set will overheat due to the limited water storage capacity of the diesel engine water tank.

(2) Oil leakage from the oil pan or oil pump. The oil sump or oil pump leakage is mostly caused by the loosening of the oil drain plug or the damage of the sealing gasket. The consequence of oil leakage from the oil pan or oil pump is the reduction or interruption of the oil supply of the generator set. As the unit reduces the cooling effect of the oil, the heat of the friction pairs of the generator unit cannot be transmitted, resulting in the unit overheating.
