Common Problems with Industrial Generators Part 2

Aug. 16, 2024

Today we will continue to introduce common problems of industrial diesel generators to diesel generator users.

3. What is the difference between standby, continuous, and primary rated power?

Backup generators are most commonly used in emergency situations, such as power outages. It is very suitable for applications with another reliable continuous power source, such as mains power. It is recommended to use only during power outages and regular testing and maintenance periods.

The main rated power can be defined as' infinite operating time ', essentially, the generator will be used as the primary power source, not just a backup or backup power source. The main rated power generator can supply power without a public power source, which is common in industrial applications such as mining or oil and gas operations located in remote areas where the power grid is not accessible.

Continuous power supply is similar to primary power supply, but has a basic rated load. It can provide continuous power to a constant load, but cannot handle overload situations or operate under variable loads. The main difference between primary rated power and sustained rated power is that primary power generators are set to have an infinite number of hours of maximum available power under variable loads, and they typically include a short-term overload capacity of around 10%.

4. If the generator I am interested in is not the voltage I need, can the voltage be changed?

The generator end is designed to be rewirable or non rewirable. If the generator is listed as rewirable, the voltage can be changed. Therefore, if it is non rewirable, the voltage cannot be changed. The generator terminal with 12 rewirable leads can be changed between three-phase and single-phase voltages; However, please remember that voltage changes from three-phase to single-phase will reduce the power output of the machine. 10 rewirable wires can be converted to three-phase voltage, but cannot be converted to single-phase voltage. 5. What does an automatic transfer switch do?

When the standard power supply fails, the automatic transfer switch (ATS) converts the standard power supply (such as the public power supply) to the emergency power supply (such as the generator). ATS detects power interruption on the circuit and sends a start signal to the engine panel. When the standard power supply returns to normal power, ATS transfers power back to the standard power supply and shuts down the generator. Automatic transfer switches are commonly used in high availability environments such as data centers, manufacturing plans, telecommunications networks, etc.

6. Can the generator I am planning to purchase run parallel to the generator I already own?

Generator sets can be connected in parallel to meet redundancy or capacity requirements. Parallel generators allow you to electrically connect them together to combine their power outputs. Parallel connection of identical generators is not a problem, but the overall design should be extensively considered based on the main purpose of the system. If you try to parallel different generators, the design and installation may be more complex, and you must remember the impact of engine configuration, generator design, and regulator design, to name a few.

7. Can you convert a 60 Hz generator into a 50 Hz one?

Generally speaking, most industrial generators can convert from 60 Hz to 50 Hz. The general rule of thumb is that a 60 hertz machine runs at 1800 revolutions per minute, and a 50 hertz generator runs at 1500 revolutions per minute. Most generators only need to reduce the engine speed to change the frequency. In some cases, it may be necessary to replace parts or make further modifications. Larger machines or machines that have already been set to low speeds are different and should always be evaluated based on specific circumstances. Dingbo Electric is more willing to have our experienced technicians inspect each generator in detail to determine feasibility and everything needed.

8. How can I determine what power generator I need?

Purchasing a generator that can meet all your power generation needs is the most important aspect of the purchasing decision. Whether you are interested in the main or backup power supply, if your new generator cannot meet your specific requirements, it will not benefit anyone as it will put unnecessary pressure on the equipment and even damage some of the devices connected to it. Determining the exact power of a generator is often very difficult, involving many factors and considerations.

Dingbo Power was founded in 1974 and is one of the earliest manufacturers of generators and diesel generator sets in China. If you want get more information, please feel free to send email to sales@dieselgeneratortech.com we will pay highly attention on your question.
