High, medium, and low voltage are the most commonly used terms when discussing voltage classification for industrial generators. From an international perspective, these classifications and ranges vary depending on where you live. For example, in the United States, the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) have guidelines and standards covering all voltage levels. The National Standards Institute (ANSI) is responsible for overseeing the creation, publication, and use of thousands of guidelines and standards that affect businesses. The Electrical Engineering Portal (EEP) provides a detailed classification of ANSI standard C84.1-1989. This document categorizes voltage into five categories. These categories can be combined into the following categories:

 

High voltage, ultra-high voltage, and ultra-high voltage (UHV) -115000 to 1100000 volts AC

 

Medium Voltage (MV) -2400 to 69000 volts AC

 

Low Voltage (LV) -240 to 600 volts AC

The NEC voltage standards are as follows:

 

High voltage distribution -1000 to 4160 volts

 

Medium distribution -50 to 1000 volts

 

Low voltage distribution -0 to 49 volts

 

The above list illustrates the classification of voltage level changes based on different management agencies. According to relevant regulations, generators below or equal to 600 volts are considered medium voltage generators, while generators above 600 volts are considered high voltage generators.
