The governor of a diesel generator is sometimes referred to as the speed controller of a diesel engine. The diesel engine must maintain the predetermined speed to maintain the generator output specifications. The governor of diesel generator sets can be divided into two basic groups:

1. Mechanical/Electrical Control - Old style generator sets use these control systems. The fuel system is controlled by a mechanical governor.

The system connects and controls the engine and generator control functions to provide stable and reliable power supply.

Mechanical/Electrical Control

The mechanical/electrical control system was the first control system introduced by generator manufacturers. This combines the control function of the mechanical engine with the power load demand of the generator. Many generator control systems are available and operate under the same design principles.

The speed sensor controller provides information to the speed sensor - magnetic sensor.

Receive signals from speed sensors and transmit them to speed controllers and external customer provided switch boards.

This control system is considered an analog control system. Complete the system settings by using adjustment screws that rotate in a specific direction to achieve the desired settings. This system provides multi generator control. The generator supplies power to the distribution panel control system of the facility.

Additional hardware installation can allow for remote communication and operation of emergency power control systems.

2. Electronic control

The design and creation of generators have advanced with the emergence of digital technology. The interface description between engine and generator interface control is as follows:

The engine ECM (electronic control module) was used when introducing the generator set, but there was no internal control system.

ECM - defines the interface between ECM and engine functions for generator sets that are not equipped with advanced generator control devices.

Analog and digital signals

Understanding the difference between analog and digital signals is crucial when updating older analog configurations to newer digital control configurations:

Analog signal - The signal is defined as a sine wave. The signal is measurable and controllable throughout the full cycle of high and low peaks. Specific adjustment screws allow for individual system adjustments.

Digital signal - The signal is defined as a square wave. The input and output of the controller have two states:

Off -0 to 2.5V DC

On -2.6 to 5.0 volts DC

Analog and digital signal interfaces, as required by the facility. Inverters can convert digital signals into analog signals. Convert analog signals into digital signals.
