Electronic Interference Effects on Diesel Generator Control System

The interface between the components of the diesel generator set, which has advanced engine control but relies on external communication from the control panel, i.e. the effect of electronic interference. The component definition is as follows:

ECM - receives input signals and transmits output signals to the engine. Receive input signals from the control panel.

 

Engine generator prime mover. Receive input signals and transmit output signals to the ECM.

 

Control panel - receives input signals from the generator and transmits output signals to the ECM.

 

The engine ECM is the core of engine control. It has the ability to complete the information loop between the engine, generator, and control panel. The digital and analog data transmitted between the engine, ECM, and control panel are inputs or outputs. Here are some examples:

 

Engine transmission to ECM - engine speed, temperature, and coolant sensors. Fuel pump, timing rail, and fuel rail pressure.

 

The ECM transmits to the engine - engine start, fuel cut-off, fuel and timing rail actuators, and fan clutch.

 

Generator transmission to control panel - The generator provides voltage to the control panel for distribution.

 

Control panel transmission to ECM - The control panel contains components provided by the customer.

 

The signal is transmitted to the ECM for throttle adjustment to maintain speed requirements.

 

The communication between system components during a power outage includes:

 

1. Send a start signal to the engine through the ECM from the control panel (via the automatic transfer switch).

 

2. Start the engine. The ECM monitors engine functions and adjusts fuel supply to achieve preset engine speeds. When the engine malfunctions severely, the ECM can shut down the engine.

 

3. The generator sends voltage to the control panel for distribution. Many control panels have the ability to monitor statistical data on generator operation.

 

4. Restore the main power supply. The control panel sends an engine stop signal to the ECM. The ECM sends a shutdown signal to the engine.

 

Engine and generator interface control

 

The newer generator models are equipped with complete monitoring hardware and support software. Added parallel function module. This arrangement can be a redundant setting for critical emergency power sources. If one generator fails, the load will decrease, and the other generator will continue to support the load.

 

In the following example, two generators powered by Cummins QSK45 generators were used. The control system used is PCC3200. The individual modules of this device are used for:

 

Fuel (connector 02) - communicates with input and output engine fuel system components.

 

Basic (connectors 05 and 06) - AC input and output basic engine functional components.

 

Generator (connector 01) - AC input and output signals to the generator.

 

Parallel connection (connector 04) - allows multiple generators to be connected in parallel.

 

TB6- Network Card. Allow network functionality for each generator on the network.

 

The sequence of events during power failure is based on the basic concepts in the ECM chapter mentioned above. The difference lies in:
