Fault of High Cooling Water Temperature in Generator Set

Aug. 28, 2023

During the operation of the generator set, due to the combustion of fuel and the friction between moving parts, a large amount of heat will be generated, causing the parts to receive strong heat and the temperature to rise very high. The task of the cooling system is to forcefully dissipate the heat absorbed by the parts in a timely manner to ensure that their temperature is within an appropriate range, thereby ensuring the normal operation of the engine.

If the temperature of the cooling water is too high, it will cause the temperature of the cylinder and intake duct to be too high, causing the incoming mixture to expand due to heating, reducing the amount of inflation, reducing engine power, increasing fuel consumption, and also causing "spontaneous combustion" or "sudden explosion".

1. Removal of scale

If scale has already formed in the cooling system of the generator set, it will seriously affect the cooling effect of the internal combustion engine and should be promptly removed. There are two cleaning methods.

(1) For generator engines with aluminum alloy cylinder heads, cleaning agents with high acidity and alkalinity should not be used.

(2) Flush with pressure water

In the absence of acid and alkali cleaning agents, pressurized clean water can also be used for flushing, but the flushing pressure should not exceed 0.3MPa (3kgf/cm2). The steps are as follows:

① Drain the cooling water from the cooling water tank, remove the radiator inlet and outlet pipes, cylinder head outlet pipes, and thermostat, and then reinstall the cylinder head outlet pipes.

② Inject clean water with a pressure not exceeding 0.3MPa (3kgf/cm2) from the cylinder head outlet pipe, rinse the water jacket, and remove the scale until the water from the water pump is not turbid.

③ Flush water into the radiator outlet pipe to remove scale until the outlet water from the water inlet is not turbid.

2. Inspection and adjustment of the tightness of the fan belt

The fan belt should not be too tight or too loose. Tightness can accelerate belt wear, shorten service life, increase the tension of the charger and water pump, accelerate the wear of the charger and water pump shaft, and also increase the power consumption of the internal combustion engine; Excessive looseness can cause the belt to slip, reduce the speed of the charger, water pump, and fan, affect heat dissipation efficiency, and reduce the charging voltage. Therefore, when the belt is too tight or too loose, adjustments must be made.

Check the tightness of the fan belt. If it does not meet the specified value, loosen the fixing screw on the bracket of the charging generator set. When moving the generator set outward, the belt will become tight, otherwise it will become loose. After adjustment, tighten the fixing screws and recheck them again. If they do not meet the requirements, they should be readjusted until they are completely qualified.

3. Add lubricating grease to the bearings in a timely manner

When there is insufficient lubricating grease in the bearings of the water pump, fan, etc. during the maintenance and overhaul of the generator set, lubricating grease (butter) should be injected into the bearings of the water pump, fan, etc. in a timely manner to reduce bearing wear.
