This article continues to introduce the gas ring function and working principle of the piston ring in diesel generator sets.
In order to improve the working conditions of the piston rings and ensure better fit between the piston rings and the cylinder, some piston rings use different cross-sections, and special attention should be paid during installation. The basic cross-sectional shape of an air ring is rectangular. Rectangular rings are easy to manufacture and widely used, but their break in performance is relatively poor and cannot meet the increasingly stringent requirements of engines. This ordinary compression ring can be installed freely in the gas ring groove. Some engines use a conical ring structure. The working surface of this ring is designed with a cone angle of 0.5 ° to 1.5 °, which reduces the contact surface between the working surface of the ring and the cylinder wall, allowing for faster wear in. The cone angle also has the function of scraping oil. But the wear of the conical ring is fast, which affects its service life. The side with sharp edges faces downwards during installation.
Some internal combustion engines use twisted rings. Cut off a portion of the upper edge of the inner circle or the lower edge of the outer circle of the twisted ring to form a stepped cross-section. This type of cross-section is asymmetrical inside and outside. After being compressed when the ring is installed in the cylinder, it produces a significant inclination of the cross-section under the action of asymmetrical internal forces, forming a conical surface with a small upper part and a large lower part on the outer surface of the ring. This reduces the contact area between the ring and the cylinder wall, making it easy to break in and has the function of scraping oil downwards. Moreover, the upper and lower end faces of the ring are in contact with the corresponding upper and lower end faces of the ring groove, which not only increases the sealing performance but also prevents the piston ring from moving up and down in the groove, causing pump oil and wear. This type of ring is currently widely used. When installing a twisted ring, attention must be paid to its up and down direction, and it cannot be installed in reverse. The inner cut should face up and the outer cut should face down. In some internal combustion engines with high heat loads, trapezoidal rings are often used to improve the anti coking ability of the gas ring. The clearance between the end face of this ring and the ring groove changes with the lateral swing of the piston under lateral force, which can crush the carbon deposits in the ring groove and prevent the piston ring from getting stuck due to adhesive buildup. This type of ring can be installed freely like a regular gas ring.
There is also a form of gas ring bucket surface ring, which has a convex circular arc working surface and is wedge-shaped with the cylinder wall in both directions, making it easy to break in, with good lubrication performance and strong sealing. This type of ring has been widely used to strengthen internal combustion engines. This type of ring, like a regular compression ring, can be installed freely in the gas ring groove.
