Honing Repair of Diesel Generator Cylinder Liner

The repair of diesel generator cylinder liner mainly involves repairing the size and surface roughness of the inner wall of the diesel engine cylinder liner. For some cylinder liners with reserved repair levels, honing repair method is an effective way to restore the inner diameter size and surface accuracy of the cylinder liner.

After the wear of the cylinder wall, when there is a significant deviation from the standard size, it is necessary to consider honing the cylinder wall to meet the requirements of the first level repair size, second level repair size, or third level repair size. The repair size of the cylinder liner is determined according to the technical requirements of the manufacturer. For example, the size of the cylinder liner of the DEUTZ FL513 series air-cooled diesel generator is 0.50mm per stage.


(1) Measurement of cylinder liner dimensions


Accurate measurement of the inner diameter of the cylinder liner is required before and after honing, and even during the honing process, the honing amount and honing size should be checked. Measurement is an important preparation for honing and selecting pistons and piston rings, and it is essential to measure accurately.


After the wear of the diesel generator cylinder liner, the size changes. When the roundness of the inner diameter of the cylinder liner is greater than 0.10mm and the cylindricity is greater than 0.20mm, cylinder boring (honing) should be considered. When boring the cylinder (honing), the size of the purchased piston and piston ring should be controlled to achieve the best fit clearance.


(2) Preparation of cylinder liner. The cylinder liner is the foundation for repairing the piston and piston ring assembly. Only good cylinder liners can ensure the repair effect of friction fit, so the preparation of cylinder liners is very important.


1. When measuring the size of the cylinder liner, attention should be paid to checking whether there is any pulling on the inner wall of the cylinder liner, whether the surface is smooth, and whether there is any pulling phenomenon. If honing is not used, it should be observed whether existing damage can be eliminated or whether it affects use.


2. Check if there are any worn protrusions on the upper end of the cylinder liner, what is the height of the protrusions, and if honing of the cylinder is necessary. To use a convex plating knife to scrape off the convex part in the circumferential direction, it should be done until there are no protruding parts to the touch, and then polish the scraping marks.


3. Prepare to measure the inner diameter of the cylinder liner, check the surface and inner diameter dimensions of the cylinder liner, and then decide whether to hon the cylinder liner.


(3) Honing of cylinder liners


The honing of cylinder liners can be carried out with or without the crankshaft removed. If the crankshaft is not removed, protective measures should be taken to prevent abrasive, honing oil, and other dirt from falling onto the surface of the crankshaft during honing. A clean cloth should be used to fill the lower part of the cylinder and the upper part of the crankshaft. After honing, it should be carefully removed.


To achieve the required size of the cylinder, two processes can be used: boring the cylinder hole and grinding the cylinder hole. When punching, the required size can be achieved, and when grinding, the required surface pattern and roughness can be achieved. Alternatively, honing can be used to achieve the required size and surface roughness with only one mechanical processing method.
