How to Repair a Faulty Diesel Generator Oil Cooler?

Jan. 05, 2024

The diesel generator oil cooler is placed in the cooling water circuit, and the temperature of the lubricating oil is controlled by the temperature of the cooling water. When the temperature of the lubricating oil is high, it is cooled by cooling water. When the engine starts, it absorbs heat from the cooling water to quickly raise the temperature of the lubricating oil.

During the operation of a diesel generator, if it is found that coolant enters the oil pan and there is oil inside the radiator, this fault is generally caused by damage to the core of the water-cooled oil cooler. The specific maintenance methods are as follows:

1. After draining the waste oil inside the cooler, remove the oil cooler. Lay the removed cooler flat, and then fill the interior of the cooler with water through the oil outlet of the oil cooler. During the experiment, block the oil inlet and inject air into the cooler using a high-pressure cylinder. If water is found at the oil inlet and outlet of the oil cooler, it indicates that the internal core or end cover sealing ring of the cooler is damaged.

2. Remove the front and rear covers of the oil cooler and take out the core. If the outer layer of the core is found to be damaged, copper welding can be used to repair it. If the inner layer of the core is found to be damaged, it is generally necessary to replace it with a new core or block both ends of the same core. When cracks or fractures appear on the end cover, cast iron welding rods can be used for welding before use. If the sealing gasket is damaged or aged, it should be replaced.

Oil cooler pressure drop inspection

When the oil cooler is partially blocked, it will cause a decrease in oil pressure. This is because the amount of oil passing through the cooler decreases, which reduces the cooling ability of the oil during high temperatures in diesel engines, resulting in a decrease in oil viscosity and pressure. Remove the oil cooler during inspection, add kerosene to the oil inlet, and then stand up the cooler. If the added fuel does not flow continuously from the outlet, it indicates that the cooler is partially blocked. Another method can also be used: input a certain pressure of engine oil into the inlet of the oil cooler and measure the pressure at its outlet. If the pressure difference between the measured inlet and outlet is significantly too large, there is a blockage in the oil cooler.

Cleaning requirements for oil cooler

When repairing a diesel engine, it is necessary to perform a strong cleaning of the oil cooler core in the following situations: 1. Diesel engine tile burning or shaft failure; 2. Diesel engine cylinder pulling or piston top burning failure; 3. When the resistance of the oil cooler is too high (exceeding 0.08 MPa).

To clean the engine oil cooler, gasoline, kerosene, or other specialized cleaning agents (such as carbon tetrachloride solution) can be used. When cleaning, directly introduce the cleaning agent into the oil cooler channel, block both ends, and then shake the oil cooler core up and down (or left and right). After releasing the cleaning agent, observe the effect. If the released cleaning agent is very dirty, you can wash it several times until you are satisfied.
