Diesel generator sets emit certain harmful substances during operation, such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), etc. These pollutants can cause varying degrees of harm to human health and the environment, which has aroused increasing attention to environmental pollution issues. In order to meet stricter emission standards, diesel generator manufacturers have taken two measures: internal purification and external purification. 1. Adopting multi valve technology
Multiple valves can increase the intake volume of diesel generator sets, making diesel fuel more thorough and improving the output power of diesel generators. Typically, there are two intake valves and two exhaust valves per cylinder. Currently, foreign products have widely adopted multi valve technology to improve engine purification.
2. Adopting turbocharging and intercooling technology
At present, most diesel generators adopt exhaust gas turbocharging technology, which not only increases the output power of the generator, but also reduces CO, HC, PM and fuel consumption after turbocharging. However, it leads to an increase in ONX emissions. Therefore, turbocharging intercooling technology is widely used in high-speed small and medium-sized diesel generators for vehicles to cool the charging air, which can not only increase the charging density and reduce the thermal load of the generator, but also improve NOX emissions. In order to improve the low-speed torque characteristics and responsiveness of diesel generators, variable nozzle turbocharging (VNT) turbochargers can meet the requirements of the entire speed range of the generator. In the idle and low-speed range of the generator, the nozzle blades are closed or have a smaller opening, thereby increasing the low-speed torque of the generator and improving responsiveness. When the generator is running at high speed, the nozzle blades are fully open to ensure that the generator obtains the required power. After adopting VNT, CO, HC, and PM emissions are improved under low operating conditions, but the effect on NOX is not significant.
3. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Technology
Exhaust gas recirculation is a technology widely used in advanced diesel generators, especially the intercooled EGR technology, which not only reduces NOX emissions but also lowers other emissions by introducing a portion of exhaust gas into the intake pipe and then into the cylinder according to the temperature and load of the diesel generator, while ensuring that the power performance of the diesel generator is not reduced. This slows down the combustion reaction rate, lowers the combustion temperature, and reduces NOX emissions.
4. Using low sulfur or sulfur free diesel fuel
The sulfur content of diesel has a significant impact on the particulate emissions of diesel generators. Experiments have shown that when the sulfur content decreases from 0.12% to 0.05%, particulate emissions will be reduced by 8% to 10%, which can prevent catalytic converter poisoning and ensure high catalytic efficiency.
5. Adopting electronic high-pressure injection technology
The use of electronic high-pressure injection technology can optimize fuel injection rate, flexibly and accurately control injection time, reduce HC and NOX emissions, and improve fuel economy. It can also increase power, reduce noise and vibration. Currently, international high-pressure injection technologies include electronic unit pumps, electronic distribution pumps, high-pressure common rails, and electronic pump nozzles.
