Major Hazards Of Low Load Operation Of Diesel Generating Sets

Regardless of whether for naturally aspirated diesel generator sets or supercharged diesel generator sets, generator manufacturers emphasize that low-load or no-load operation time should be minimized, and stipulate that the minimum operating load should not be less than 25% to 30% of the rated power of diesel generator sets . This is because the diesel generator set may have the following five major hazards when operating under low load for a long time:

1. Pistons-the cylinder liner is not well sealed, the oil runs up, enters the combustion chamber and burns, and the exhaust of diesel generator sets emits blue smoke.

2. For supercharged diesel generator sets, the supercharging pressure is low due to low load and no load. It is easy to cause the sealing effect of the turbocharger oil seal (non-contact type) to decrease, and the oil will enter the turbocharger chamber and enter the cylinder along with the intake air.

3. Part of the oil that goes up to the cylinder participates in combustion, and part of the oil cannot be completely burned, forming carbon deposits on the valve, intake passage, piston crown, piston ring, etc., and some of it is discharged with the exhaust gas. In this way, oil will gradually accumulate in the exhaust duct of the cylinder liner, and carbon deposits will also form.

4. When oil accumulates in the pressurizing chamber of the turbocharger to a certain extent, it will leak out from the joint surface of the turbocharger;

5. Long-term low-load operation will result in increased wear of the moving parts of the diesel generator set, deterioration of the engine's combustion environment, etc., resulting in the early overhaul period.
