Power Generation Technology of Generators Part 1

May. 16, 2024

Although over 95% of power outages last less than 5 minutes, and nearly 99% of power outages last less than 20 minutes, facility managers must consider the impact of power outages on facility operation and residents. In addition, facility managers may now expect the on-site power generation system to provide more electricity than backup or emergency power. An example is to reduce the cost of purchasing electricity by performing tasks such as peak shaving. Before learning generator technology, one should first understand the generator system. As follows:

The selection of the system requires facility managers to understand the system's capabilities and the power requirements of the loads they are attempting to meet. Three basic types of systems meet on-site power requirements: battery systems, generators, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. The choice depends on the load being served. In many cases, factory managers will use more than one power generation option, and more complex facilities typically use these three options.

When seeking to provide backup power, there are two types of loads to consider: critical loads and basic loads. Critical loads must remain online to prevent significant losses and avoid security risks. Even if the facility no longer continues to operate, it must still meet the critical load. Key loads include fire alarms, exit lights, emergency lighting, safety systems, and selected mechanical equipment. Most critical loads can only withstand power outages for a few seconds. Some, such as safety systems, may require continuous power supply.

If the facility is to continue operating, it must provide power to the basic load. Some basic loads, such as lighting systems, may be interrupted for a few minutes, especially if emergency lighting systems are installed. Other loads, such as telecommunications systems and computers, cannot survive even a brief power outage without losing data and long-term restarts.

Choosing a specific type of power generation system requires understanding the types of critical and important loads that must be supplied during power service interruptions. Each type of system has its own capabilities and limitations.

system options

Battery systems have been used to power specific loads, such as telecommunications equipment and safety systems. However, with the development of small, low-cost, and self-sufficient UPS systems, the use of battery systems is limited to self-sufficient emergency lights.

The initial cost and maintenance requirements of battery systems are relatively low, and they are popular when the main focus is on providing sufficient lighting for people to leave buildings during power outages. The lighting equipment in corridors, stairwells, and other areas can provide 15 to 60 minutes of lighting time, enough to evacuate most facilities.

Most devices are independent, including the light source, battery, and charging system, all inside a single casing. When the device senses a power outage, the light will automatically switch to battery power and turn on. When the power is restored, the device turns off the lights and charges the battery. Maintenance is limited to the operation of testing devices and regular inspection and testing of batteries.

The disadvantage of battery powered systems is that they only provide power for lighting or specialized systems. Providing power to other devices requires one of the other two options.
