The load test is mainly to determine the performance and condition of the diesel generator set, including aspects such as system characteristics and component quality. Through the load test, the user can roughly understand the condition of the diesel generator set, and if a problem is found, it can be overhauled in time to restore the unit to its normal state. The load test of diesel generator set generally includes the following aspects:
1. Thoroughly inspect each component.
Before the crew operator discovers any errors or malfunctions in the diesel generator set, he will first ensure that each component is operating normally. For example, for water-cooled diesel generators-the main focus is to check the liquid level. The staff will continue to check the fuel tank and coolant or radiator tank to make sure they are full and at the same time make sure the fuel level is correct.
2. Find any faults.
Turn on the diesel generator and let it reach normal operating temperature. The engineer will observe and look for any possible problems or listen to any unusual noises. Once any faults are found, the engineer will deal with them before continuing the test.
3. Connect the load.
The engineer will start connecting the load, although it is best to start with a 380 volt load, and then add a smaller 220 volt load until it accounts for about 50% of the maximum continuous rated load. Please note that the sum should not exceed, and he will know how much volts are best to use load.
4. Check the amperage.
Using an ammeter, the engineer will check the amperage and voltage through the volt-ohm milli-ampere meter (VOM) setting to maintain neutrality. The current should be 50% of the rated watt output exceeding the voltage. Once the engineer notices any voltage that is below a certain amount under the maximum load, then this will mean that the diesel generator has failed the test and needs to be repaired immediately. Diesel generator overhaul is an option that can be considered because the engineer will dismantle the equipment and make sure that every component is carefully checked for any necessary repairs.
5. Observe the diesel generator.
While maintaining the load during the test, the engineer will continue to closely monitor the diesel generator. The key things to note are monitoring output, overheating and any abnormal noise. Once a problem occurs, the engineer will immediately shut down the equipment to minimize any damage, and repair the equipment to restore its original state.
The duration of the test depends on the generator type. It is best to run a large industrial-grade diesel generator for about a week under maximum load. And small diesel generators like light portable diesel generators should not run for more than three to four hours under maximum load.
6. Take out the load and let it run.
Slowly, once the test is over, the engineer will remove the load and let the diesel generator run under light load for about an hour. He will notice that the diesel generators are removed five to ten minutes before turning off.
In addition to the load test of the unit itself, the motors and switchgear must also be tested to ensure the operational reliability of the entire unit.
