The Engine Speed of The Generator Decreases with Increasing Load

Aug. 27, 2024

What's wrong with my generator?

If there is probably nothing wrong, this could be one of the following issues.

The Engine Speed of The Generator Decreases with Increasing Load

Generator overload

When overloaded, the generator will slow down when it reaches the maximum fuel limit. In this case, you should check the load and reduce it to within the range.

What happens when I apply a load to a diesel engine.

When the engine runs at the set speed, it will generate the set torque value. When a load is applied, the engine will effectively respond in one of three ways depending on the size of the load:

If the load is small, the diesel engine force should be easily overcome by the load force, and the RPM or air-fuel mixture changes very little.

By applying an additional mixture of fuel and air to react to the load, it will generate extra power and overcome the load. This is usually manifested intuitively in diesel engines through a brief decrease in RPM and the initial inability to burn additional fuel cleanly, manifested as black smoke.

If the load is too high and the engine cannot react, or if the load is too high and the engine cannot rotate, the engine may stall.

When a load is applied to the engine, we refer to it as the engine's reaction to that load. More specifically, the engine works by increasing the amount of air and fuel entering the cylinder in each working cycle. The more air and fuel are mixed, the greater the explosion and the greater the power generated, which then increases to a level where the engine can overcome the load.

Prevent diesel/air filters

If your engine blocks the air or diesel filter, it will not be able to achieve full power. Due to a lack of oxygen or fuel to maintain rated speed, combustion in the cylinder will be poor. This may also be accompanied by black smoke.

Generator speed regulator decreases

For engines equipped with mechanical speed controllers, they will have built-in descent. This means that as the load increases, the engine speed will decrease. In this case, the no-load speed should be set to 3-5% in order to reach the rated speed at full load.

Founded in 1974, Dingbo Power Generation Equipment Co., Ltd. is a professional manufacturer of diesel engines, generators and generator sets, and one of the earliest manufacturers of diesel engines, generators and generator sets in China. Since 1992, the company has been a qualified generator set manufacturer inspected by the National Internal Combustion Engine Generator Set Quality Supervision and Inspection Center. Over the years, the company has carried out extensive cooperation with Shanghai Diesel, Weichai, Sweden Volvo, Sino US joint venture Chongqing Cummins, American Qianglu and other companies, and has become a (OEM) supporting factory and technical center. It has 64 sales service departments nationwide, providing users with design, supply, commissioning and maintenance services at any time. Dingbo quality is worth depending on.
